Rating: Summary: Interesting incite into a leader of reknown Review: Many useful anecedotes relating to US Grant as a military leader and human being. Easy way to learn many beneficial principles of leadership, while enjoying easy reading and learning. Only disappointment was there was no whiskey or women!
Rating: Summary: Good book to browse, but very shallow Review: Mr. Kaltman essentially takes a large number of conventional wisdom management and leadership maxims (and, in some cases, cliches) and matches them to episodes from the Life of U. S. Grant. This makes for a book that serves well as coffee-table browsing type of book; one can flip it open to any page and read a couple of pages on some episode and the lesson of the story and put it back down with a half satisfied "Hmm!". As history the book adds no real insight to the life of one of America's premier generals and you've probably heard the leadership principles it contains espoused before in other venues.
Rating: Summary: The 1st book you should buy for the Year 2000! Review: Sensational book from an author who someday should write a bio on Melvin Snerd, the great 19th century hamologist enthusiast. Rather than dragging out HG Wells and building a time machine, Kaltman transports us into Grants head with his insightful writing style. Reading this book makes me wish I could hang my employees if they had a discipline problem to set a good example for the others, much like Grant would make an example of a bad soldier who disobeyed his order. Seriously, this book is an easy read, and it will certainly appeal to civil war buffs like myself and most certainly to managers of any business. I feel inspired...I think I will go hang some employees!
Rating: Summary: Innovative format Review: The format is wonderful and makes for great reading when you have a few minutes here and there. The lessons offer validation for the experienced manager or teachings for the up and coming. Either way its entertaining and the reader can easily match the lessons to his or her own experience.
Rating: Summary: Management Parables Review: The lessons that Al Kaltman provides in his book are short and based on General Ulysses S. Grant's campaigns and life experiences. They are not always to be taken at face value, for there is a wisdom that lies behind the one to two sentence 'lesson' much like a zen parable. My appreciation for the book grew over the months after I read it, as my own experiences and tribulations opened my eyes past the 'superficial' ancedotes noted by other readers. As I do not have time to read 700 page long biographies with my hectic work schedule, the lessons stuck out in my mind because they were worded so simply and were very easy to look up at a later date for a refresher. I recommend this book to other professionals, who are in or seeking management positions. I believe that the wisdom contained in the book will help anyone be a successful leader. --My father, who is a Civil War enthusiast, absolutely loved it.
Rating: Summary: Immensely fascinating Review: The quickest 300+ page book I've ever read! Great adaptation of the U.S. Grant biographical information applied to serious management methodology ... a masterpiece.

Rating: Summary: Fascinating and inspiring Review: This book flouts the tradition of writing management books as a series of boring dictums. Rather, Kaltman allows us to see the Civil War unfold through the eyes of America's unsung hero General Grant, and challeneges us without preaching to learn the lessons Grant learned along the way. Well worth the read for managers, history buffs and anyone who has any contact whatsoever with people.
Rating: Summary: Very good, easy read! Review: This book has come in handy on many an occasion when a succint response to a workplace situation was in order. It is well arranged, easy to read, and VERY timely, considering it was "written" 100+ years ago! I would recommend it to both managers and "the managed" like myself. I don't usually go in for business or management reading, since I get enough of that corporate culture all week long, but I don't regret reading this one at all!
