Summary: A must read for all 1st generation American immigrants
Review: Immigrants from all races can relate to Rodriguez's experience. Being an immigrant myself and growing up during my teen years in melting pot Los Angeles, my experiences were in most cases similar to the author. The book reveals the personal issues he had to face with becoming an assimilated educated Mexican-American and losing his native cultural identity and how it affected his relationship with his family. However he neglects to mention what most immigrants had to face with, racism. Reading this book helped me to deal with my own personal issues with regards to assimilation, race, and family.

Summary: Boring
Review: Andrew Amerson Engl 155 10/1/98

Hunger of Memory, was not a very interesting book. It is not the kind of book that really catches my attention, although it is a good book. Rodriguez did a very good job describing his feelings on affirmative action and bilingual education with great detail. But I still don't see why he had to write a whole book on it. I wouldn't recommend anybody to read this book.

Summary: Was Able To Relate To Author
Review: There were times in the book where Rodriguez went on and on about being a scholarship boy and continuously speaking about his ideas about bilingual education. I found that to be extremely pointless. That's probably because I didn't care about what he thought about bilingual education, or maybe because I totally disagree with his views about the two subjects. Overall I think that Rodriguez did a good job in conveying his views and beliefs about many things. He tied them to the fact that he was a bicultural child who had lost his Mexican identity. The reason why I could somewhat relate to him, is because I am also a bicultural American. It wasn't the same for Rodriguez. He didn't feel he was Mexican, and he certainly didn't take pride in that. He got sucked into the big melting pot of this multicultural nation, forgetting all that he had. I have to admit that I probably would not choose to read this book if it wasn't assigned to me through school, but I'm glad that I did, because I got to think about what preserving your culture and heritage means. I recommend this book to all bicultural people, only because if you're not bicultural you'd have trouble relating to the author, and then the book will REALLY be hard to finish. :)

Summary: "A Cultural Review"
Review: Richard Rodriguez's book, Hunger of Memory is an interesting view on the part of Rodriguez about culture. He thoroughly goes through his experiences and his beliefs. It is interesting to read how Rodriguez believes that his past Mexican culture no longer plays an important role for him. This is unfortunate to hear because I believe that culture is important in building an identity for an individual.

Summary: Hunger of Memory was a very helpful and interesting book.
Review: Matt Zepeda English 155 Comp. # 61110 10-01-98

I found the book Hunger of Memory by Richard Ridriguez to be very interesting. Experiences in his life that he talks about in his book helped me to understand situations in my life. Some people may not find this book interesting but its only because they probably can not relate to it. Since I could relate to Rodriguez I found the book to be a great asset to me.

Summary: fact or fiction
Review: A reader- This book doses not really apply to people who had been 3rd or 4th generation Americans. This book on a boy becoming a man of middle America is told in so many ways that one more in the pool of stories about something that doses not matter to the majority of people. It has good bases story and content but to read it for more then it is worth is not logical. Should be taken as a fictional story about an ideal and nothing more.

Summary: A great book on public alienation
Review: In Hunger of Memory, Richard Rodriguez expressed himself as being culturally and publicly alienated. He found himself separated from his family and lost culturally of his Hispanic background. Rodriguez also viewed issues on bilingual education and public alienation. An interesting book overall but might be understood more by those who can relate to Rodriguez.

Summary: not particularly interesting to me
Review: I believe that this book was not meant for all audiences. I for one did not care for the book. It did not apply to me as a book like this should. In my opinion, I could not get past the fact that he was whining throughout the book. He makes it sound as though he is the only one in this world that had any problems growing up. Although some of us cannot relate to his personal experiences we do have our own problems. I am not totally disregarding his book, it may apply to a lot of people, I just believe that the book does not hit any nerves in me.

Summary: A contemporary classic
Review: HUNGER OF MEMORY is an important book and a needed one. Try it with Jack Lopez's CHOLOS AND SURFERS and Mary Helen Ponce's HOYT STREET for a three-book feast.
