Summary: A broad look at a true American leader.
Review: This book left a lot to be desired in terms of a good look inside General Electric and Jack Welsh. I was hoping for a truly unique look into what makes Mr. Welsh a great leader, instead we only get a gloss over of the basics.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great book
Review: This book shows Jack Welch at his best. Although Welch does not think this highly of himself, this book fairly describes what he accomplished. A must read for any businessman. Very inspirational book, a lot of good ideas. If everyone was doing this, business would be much better.

Summary: No Management Fads Here
Review: This book sits in a class of its own. It does not espouse any particular management fad such as TQM or Reengineering. Rather, it speaks of how one man energized and led an organization to become the most valuable corporate entity in the world.

This is a must read for those that consider themselves change agents. And for those that like status quo, you should probably read this as well to better understand why you might be changed right out of a job.

Summary: Very disappointing
Review: This book was given to me as a must read by the leadership of our organization. The "rah rah" patronizing of Jack Welch nauseated me after 10 chapters, by chapter 20 I was sick.

Not much substance. As one review stated, a 2 page summary would suffice.

I would not recommend this book.

Summary: The Management Message
Review: This book was very insightful and set the foundation for new and tenured managers to send the right message throughout their organizations. Whether new to an organization or fixing an existing one, this book will provide the building blocks for ensuring you can inculcate the team you wish to lead. Most importantly, the book points out the clear delineation between managers and leaders.

Summary: LESSONS ON WINNING LEADERSHIP
Review: This is a book about WINNING and not simply being competitive. To Jack Welch, winning isn't everything, it is the ONLY thing and this has certainly captured the imagination of the author. All too many executives in the world today are on the yellow brick road - searching for a heart, searching for a brain, and searching for courage. Hopefully, this book will enable many of today's losing executives to understand that winning is not driven by the notion of how far one can get their head up their rear-end. I believe that obviating the problem of executive-level cranial rectitis most assuredly was a goal of this author. In this regard I loved the book!

Summary: Simply Fantastic
Review: This is a must-read for all who would like to get some inspirations but couldn't find it in other books.

Simply marvellous.

Summary: A BLUEPRINT FOR ACHIEVING SUCCESS
Review: This is Robert Slater's third book about Jack Welch, who has achieved almost mythic status in his 17 years as CEO of GE, making the company the wolds most valuable. This new book focuses on the lessons all businesses can learn from how Welch transformed GE from a manufacturing to a service centered business by embracing change, creating a boundaryless organization focussing on globalization and emphasizing communication. Slater is a Welch fan. I would also recommend reading Thomas F. O'Boyles muckraking work AT ANY COST, JACK WELCH, GENERAL ELECTRIC and THE PURSUIT OF PROFIT as an antidote to boosterism and an insight to the darker side and human cost of radical change in a giant corporation. After you have finished with Welch and GE read the refreshing 2000 PERCENT SOLUTION by Mitchell, Coles, and Metz for a wealth of information and freeing your organization from common practices that stall growth. Welch examples may inform us but Mitchell, Coles and Metz give us a blueprint for achieving success in our businesses and organizations and involving our employees in the process of exponential growth

Summary: Dumbed Down
Review: While I have the utmost respect for Jack Welch and all he's accomplished in his career, I couldn't make it past the third chapter of this book. This collection of stories and insights reads as though its intended audience should be preparing for Junior Prom. The ideas are unnecessarily simplistic and the presentation is insultingly plain.

Though Jack Welch's approach may have been straight forward, his experiences need not be related in such a callow way.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: worthwhile
Review: While not a rave, it is always worthwhile to read the stories of the very successful. Jack Welch is without question a revolutionary businessman, and his story is well told here. The book itself was typical of its type (the writing was lackluster), what makes it special is the ideas behind the words.

Don't look for this book if you want a cultish depiction of Jack Welch, the Man the Myth the Legend. Instead, read this as a business owner might and apply its lesons to your corner of the world.
