Summary: A fantastic, honest and inspiring account
Review: This book was handed to us by someone who thought it would help our son. Without this book i don't know if we would have found this method and tried it. Our son is going great guns and we couldn't be happier. It is a blessing to have someone tell their story so honestly so you go through that journey with them. My entire family has read it and we thank the author from the bottom of our hearts.

Summary: One family's compelling experiences
Review: I have no personal experience with autism, but found Catherine Maurice's family story compelling. She describes the Lovaas method in great detail, describing how she cured two of her children. Documentation of the therapy she carried out is provided in appendices.

My one concern (and the reason I gave the book four stars instead of five) is that I think Maurice does a tremendous injustice to Clara Park, author of The Siege. Maurice was inspired by the imagery in the John Donne poem that Clara Park discussed in The Siege. However, Maurice presents Park's struggle with her autistic daughter as a fundamentally passive one. When I read The Siege, imagine my surprise to discover that Clara Park had done behavioral therapy with her own autistic daughter! (Clara Park's daughter improved, but was not cured.) I think Maurice failed to give full credit to Clara Park, a true pioneer - but please don't take my word for it, read The Siege in addition to this book.

Summary: Beautiful and heart-warming
Review: I read this book sometime in the early 90's and although I can't recall the fine details of the book, I remember it as an excellent and inspiring book. Reading about the author's struggles and her children's recovery helped determine my career path and I've now have one more year to go before graduating as a speech therapist. It's wonderful to know what hope, patience and determination can amount to and the ways I can help make a difference in someone's life, however much / little that may be. Thank you for sharing, Catherine. God Bless.

Summary: Great Book!
Review: This is a really good book as it's very interesting, moving and exciting at the same time. Of course, not all autistic children can "recover" through Behavior therapy, but many improve and all in all this book is a source of hope and encouragement. Worth a read or two!

Summary: An eye-opener for those on the outside looking in
Review: Our daughter, a recent college graduate, started working on a team doing behavior modification with autistic children a little over a year ago. The mother of one child gave Lauren this book to read, and Lauren passed it on to us. While I had always thought that her chosen work was worthwhile, I truly had no idea what it encompassed until I read this book. It gave me a new admiration for my daughter, and for the writer and her family. I hope they see this review and I hope and pray they are well. I would welcome a return email from the author to share other ideas about parenting. I saw a lot of myself in this book, just as a mother. Thank you.

Summary: My therapists work better after reading this book
Review: I have found that I see a marked improvement in all my therapists who read this book. They have a better better overall perspective. They also see hope for marked improvements for autistic children and that they can be part of that process. It is so easy for therapists to become discouraged because progess can be so slow. This book gave them the big picture and thus enthusiasm. Bravo to the author!

Summary: an extremely narrow view
Review: This book presents a singular intervention & implies that it will work for all with autism. After reading this several years ago (just after my son was diagnosed), I researched Lovaas' ABA & asked my son's therapists about it. Neither could whole-heartedly endorse ABA. Doing my own research, I discovered that it is hardly a 'cure' but behavior training/management. Since not all children with autism are alike, it is presumptuous to conclude that they would all respond to the same intervention. I was also disturbed to read a book on treatment of autism that Maurice had edited. In a chapter exploring various treatments, she was critical of other methods (referring to some as "voodoo") while extolling the virtues of ABA. This would put her objectivety in question. While it is a good account of a family coping with autism, parents would do well to be wary of anyone who offers a 'cure'.

Summary: Something to believe in!
Review: This book is a Godsend for any parent facing the daunting task of finding information on Autism. It was the first book that I read that I could identify with. Finally here is information that can possibly help my child "recover" instead of the usual pity and gloom and doom that I was getting from professional sources. Thank you Ms. Maurice for an inspiring and insightful book!

Summary: This Book Saved Us From Dark Aged Autism Treatment
Review: Thank God for Catherine Maurice and sharing her story. This was the most accurate book that explained autism to me.As a nurse practitioner I find It difficult many pediatricians,to whom parents first turn can not recognize the early symptoms of this disorder. This book was my story also.I asked many so called experts what they thought and was told this treatment forced them to be normal,it was adversive, the treatment was expensive.I lost 1 year of my son's life listening to these people who also told me that my child would never speak. The shell of a child that was in my home is now a little boy.He talks in sentence's, read's, write's and attend's a typical kindergarten class.YES ABA/DT is a long hard road to be on but if your determined to save your child with a method of scientifically proven therapy for the most effective result's this is it.I tried the DARK AGED WAY first for 1 year, what a wasted year it was.My son will always have autism he isnt one of the recovered children, but the effectiveness of this method has worked for this family and his level of functioning has improved dramatically. Remember science work's and I have the data (4 yrs now)to prove it.I owe ton's of gratitude to Catherine Maurice as if you never shared your story we'd still be in the dark ages. Please Catherine help us Advocate and Educate the public and medical professional's so NO more children get lost in the DARK AGES.
