Summary: An Enjoyable Experience
Review: The main idea that Jack Welch presented in his book was to be yourself. Rather than fit himself into the bureaucratic mold of GE, Jack Welch remained true to himself. This allowed him to make positive changes in the company by bringing in new ideas and management tactics. By showing readers that this approach worked for him, he hopes to inspire and motivate others to live up to their dreams while being themselves.

Mr. Welch starts this book off by giving background information about where he grew up and what his childhood was like. He does this by giving examples of different things that happened to him. This style continues for the rest of the book. It is enjoyable to have him give examples to back up some of his statements. This reinforcement not only gives him more credibility but it also makes the book more interesting. Mr. Welch describes many experiences and connections he had in college and eventually gets to the time in his life when he took a job at GE. His superiors liked his work in the plastics department of GE and soon promoted him. Mr. Welch holds his first couple positions at GE dear to him because they taught him a lot about promotion, management, and making connections that would help him further down the line. From there Mr. Welch's career took off until he eventually became CEO.

This book does a good job of showing the difficulty of mastering the concept of management. Mr. Welch learns this art form and is constantly trying out new ideas in an attempt to get the company to run better. The minor weakness of this book lies in Mr. Welch's strong competitive attitude. Even though he tries hard to quell this side of himself, Mr. Welch seems to be bragging and boasting about his accomplishments at times. Overall I would say this is a pretty good book which can teach a lot about business. Mr. Welch's words are inspiring and quite motivational to say the least.

Summary: Jack fell down and broke his crown
Review: Jack is a very sharp guy, but I had to deduct a few rating stars. I had an english teacher who would ask something like this, "Is that your final answer?" If you confirmed with a yes, it was either "plus ten points" to your relieve or "minus five" to your disappointment. Sometimes you took a real chance, "minus two-hundred". I learned some things from this book that I think are of value, things that I also feel have helped me in a general way through the days. I don't want to give them away, because there are plenty of gems he shares throughout the book, but I recently found out that Jack is reportedly jacking over his second wife by jacking off with jill, and he dismisses this with the press by saying it's his personal life, none of your business, which has to take it beyond the "reportedly" label, which makes it just that much more inexcusable coming from a very visible celebrity. That's just the way it is, nothing is personal, nothing, once you become a celebrity. Every celebrity knows this common sense reality. That's the price you pay, and you had to know that and decided on that, at some point. Getting people to face reality is one of life's great challenges. Stop kidding yourself, Jack, and face reality. Nevertheless the overall things that Jack shares about reality, education, and integrity, at least so he shares in his writings, are worth reading about definitely, are worth feeling and thinking about. I realize that we are all just human with our mistakes and errors, we all have the fragments in our character, and I have to respect that Jack does admit some mistakes he made, including his workaholic tendencies and I take that to mean his some-what habitual neglect toward his family and first wife. And on the other hand, what I think he means, having the standard of high integrity in business dealings, as opposed to the type of bad judgement and character we see through the Enron scandal. But I was a little bothered by Jack's apparent lack of balance in trying to give more equal weight to family and business, and I am very bothered now that a man who speaks so much about integrity would reportedly do this type of thing to his present wife. Up to this point, I felt that the book was something I would like to keep in a private library collection. I have decided to dust off my shelf and sell this book for about half-price, because I generally feel that the man's words throughout the book and his present actions in reality just don't add up somehow. I'm not sure if this is what he wants us to believe, that he spoke from the gut and that he's a man of high standards; just that the behavior of cheating on one's wife is a form of stealing, of ultimate betrayal, of the worst sort. I don't want whatever is going on here on my shelf, however I do suggest that you buy the book, excellent easy reading, and read it as an autobiography of a successful businessman in his own right, but definitely not a keeper. There is something to learn at every turn, something from everybody whether good or bad. After reading the book, place it up for sale as I have done.

Summary: how to make a big company move fast !
Review: i had heard about Mr jack welch year back.so i felt a needto know more about him and his ideas and visions about GE.this books tell the story with quite openess and clarity than any other book's.the changes which he brought about in GE are worthy of emulating by each person who is working in a large organisations around the world.it's about how a company can loose it's focus and destroy it self.change is the essence of life and organisations should not hesitate to embrace the change which is dynamic and is very much essentail for the growth of the company itself and most importantly for the people working in those organisations.

Summary: You Had to Live it!
Review: Excellent record of Neutron Jack and what he accomplished at GE. He had two sets of rules, one for him and his people and one for all others. Like Bill Gates (except with a huge, established company), he made many people successful from an accumulation of wealth standpoint and Jack shares how he did it. You will enjoy getting a look into how this leader pulled it off. You had to live the way of life of GE to really appreciate the exhilitration from sharing the trip with him. Reading the book will get you as close as possible to a real leader even if you don't have lunch with him.

Summary: Jack - Straight from the Gut
Review: This book exhibits Jack's extraordinary rememberance and recolection of times and events in his life. It seemed as if they were happening as the story unfolded. This autobiography proves that it takes a long time and a lot of hard work to make it to the top in a company as large as General Electric. The style of writing used in this book is very unique, although the storyline did seem to "drag" in places. Overall, I would rate this book at three stars because of it lacking climaxes.

Summary: Excellent For Managers...
Review: This book is a basic explanation of what goes on in the mind of a great manager. Pay close attention to what he has to say, because you can apply his ideas literally or use the concepts to build your own management style. I would trade my entire career, up to this point, to work for someone like Jack Welch. I suspect that most of his people say that. With loyalty like that, you owe it to yourself to learn how to be the best manager you can be.

Buy it. Read it. Make notes in the margins and keep it on your desk.

Summary: Interesting to the Ignorant
Review: In this case the ignorant was me, somehow I had no idea who Jack Welch was or how powerful GE was before reding this book. To me it was an interesting ride being taken from every corne of the company. I had no idea that they owned NBC, I found that very interesting. The book was easy to read, and while I probably only need about 20 year updates on GE I don't regret reading it. Of course he had his ego problem. Somehow he saw Jeryy Seinfeld as the funniest comedian in the world and believed that American has outright choosen Jay Leno as their favorite late night host. I'm sure this book would be much more interesting to someone involved in GE, but it's still a good way to spend a weekend.

Summary: Straight from Jack
Review: I bought the book on CD which was narrated by Jack himself. I gave this book 5 stars because to hear his side of how he became successfull was truly an inspiration to hear. It was very well written from a personal level, and was designed to make everyone join in the experience of his life from GE Plastics to CEO.

Summary: Great CEO, Middling Writer
Review: This book is a strange mixture of business book and celebrity autobiography. It will be bought by millions not because of the writing (which isn't very good) or because of the ideas (because they are available elsewhere) but because of the subject an author, one of the finest CEOs of the century.

As a CEO, Jack Welch was one of the greatest. I can attest to that as a former GE employee. As much as our management fought against every idea from headquarters, he made a difference. That difference was made obvious when I moved to other companies and found them wanting. His greatest achievement was in accomplishing what he did with a huge collossus of a company, the kind of organization which is typically sclerotic with bureaucracy.

Unfortunately, the book doesn't live up to the CEO. There isn't much substance here, and if you have heard very much of the book tour, you have probably heard most of the substance.

The book is an easy read, and easily worth the effort. Anyone in business should know at least this much about what Jack Welch has to say. Welch set a high standard for his businesses. It's a pity that the book doesn't meet that standard. Five stars to the CEO, three to the book.
