Summary: Excellent starter
Review: As a student of philosophy this economical book was quite valuable in determining just what postmodernism actually is. The work has excellent bibliographies for further investigation. Ward's book should be read by any college-bound person so that they may have the knowledge to destroy this disease which has infected our society.

Summary: Excellent starter
Review: Before I read this book, I was very skeptical about why anyone would want to read this book. Then I realized what a pompous jerk I was. This book opened new doors for me and my family. I didn't believe in postmodernism before this book. It's scary how much postmodernism is really out there.

Summary: Gratitude!
Review: I cannot add anything descriptive to the previous 5-star reviews, but out of gratitude for this book, I had to come and add my quantitative vote. Ward does not take a position on anything, except perhaps to warn you when he is risking oversimplification, for the sake of clarity. His sole purpose is to explain the positions of other writers. So now if I come across a reference to any of these writers, I really have a fair idea of what is being referred to, which is a great leap forward for me. Also, there is sufficient depth on these writers to guide your future reading interests. Now I am going to order several books by Baudrillard.

Summary: Wonderful Primer for Pomo
Review: I have been looking for a text to introduce students who likely have had no advanced critical theory to the gnarly world of postmodernism. This is the one.

It is clear and concise. It is very well organized. And nothing about it cheats the subject by skimming over difficult concepts.

Summary: Perfect For Beginers
Review: I have taken a class on postmodern literature and read several books on postmodernism. I had difficulty understanding until I read this book. For anyone that doesn't have a clue about postmodernism, this is the place to begin.

Summary: This text's very existence is postmodern itself
Review: If your reaction to a _Teach Yourself_ series book on critical theory is negative...then you are exactly the person who most needs to read this text. A theory of pop culture, mass culture, and the (non-existant) distinction between "high" (read: élitist) and "low" culture, postmodernism more than any other ism begs a volume of this sort. All the same, Ward's text is a not-so-superficial introduction to the philosophers whose ideas have lead to postmodern critical theory: starting with the structuralists (Saussure, Lévi-Strauss), pass through deconstructionists to poststructuralists...Ward treats Delleuze, Derrida, the Frankfurt School, Jencks, Foucault--and of course Madonna. This text is above no one, and don't resist buying just because it doesn't come in a thick hardcover tome with more italicized philosobabble. If you're interested in postmodernism, this is the place to start. Also suitable as an introductory undergraduate text. Terrific for party tricks as well.

Summary: Real Fun To Read
Review: This book is a breeze - which was surprising considering how informative it is. If you're wondering what all the noise about "Postmodernism" is in all its forms (or if you know someone who wants to know) get this little book.
