This book contains ten tutorial style lessons in a print format. The same tutorial lessons are presented in an electronic format on the CD that it bundled in the book. The CD shows the Pro/ENGINEER interface, menu picks, and models that are being created while a voice overlay explains the steps that are being shown. A copy of Pro/ENGINEER is not required to play the CD. This book can be used as the core material for a three to five day training course on Pro/ENGINEER at the basic level. Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Not worth the money... Review: This book was really meant as a textbook for Toogood's class in CAD, given at the University of Alberta. As such, it is really apparent that he took his hand-written overheads and just typed them out in book format; that is, this book is not much help to those with real questions about Pro/E. The lessons will be familiar to anyone who has taken the three-day course from either PTC or Rand - your binders have a lot more information than this book! The book is made even worse by the fact that there is no index; in this day of simply clicking the mouse to create an index this oversight is not forgiveable. Toogood does not give any details on many of the more fundamental issues associated with Pro/E such as ensuring that the config.pro file is set correctly. There is also very little information on working on anything more complicated than basic models since the sections on drawings and assemblies are very weak. The cd that comes with the book is not very good either; that is, if you can even view it. It should be in some other software and/or format since both of my computers come back with errors about "low system resources" when I try to run the program. In the end I had to find a rather old pc in order to run the disk. If you are the type of person who learns from listening to a disembodied voice drone on while an animated mouse points and clicks through Pro/E's many menus then this is the cd for you! For the rest of us, I'd suggest spending your money on the PTC manuals or else taking one of the official courses. Considering the price of this book you are not getting your money's worth!

Rating: ![0 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-0-0.gif) Summary: Effective, classroom-tested Pro/E training material Review: This book was written to introduce new users to Pro/Engineer, and take them to an intermediate skill level. I have tried to write the book I wish I had when first learning Pro/E! The material covered includes basic part design, assemblies, and creation of detailed engineering drawings. Completion of all lessons in the Tutorial requires about 40 hours. The Tutorial has been updated twice for new Releases of Pro/Engineer. I have been using the Tutorial for three years, with excellent results, in a mechanical engineering design graphics course. Since my class size is typically 120 to 130 students of diverse backgrounds (in terms of CAD experience), I needed a book that would be able to stand alone and allow students to learn the basic elements of Pro/E at their own pace. A large portion of the Pro/E training in the course occurs outside regularly scheduled computer lab time, so I wanted the book to be complete and accurate in its description of Pro/E commands. At the same time, I wanted the book to be able to answer most student questions, allowing them to proceed with a minimum of instructor assistance. In the book, I try to balance breadth of coverage of basic Pro/E functions, and depth of understanding of the modeling philosophy inherent in a feature-based, parametric modeler. Thus, students must do more than blindly execute command sequences (although these are given in full detail in the Tutorial), but must also spend some time thinking about what they are doing. To reinforce this, numerous exercises are scattered about the book which require the student to explore the Pro/E models they create to discover the "why's" as well as the "how's" of successful modeling. Most importantly, they are introduced to the Pro/E tools necessary to recover from modeling mistakes and errors. Several students have landed summer jobs based on their knowledge of Pro/E after taking this course. Many more students are using Pro/E in subsequent design courses in our program and for student design competitions. Comments from users have been positive and the success of this Tutorial has been gratifying. I am particularly pleased that the book has been adopted at so many other schools. Nonetheless, improvements are possible and I am always open to suggestions for improving the book. I look forward to its continued development.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: A Decent Tutorial Review: This tutorial was used in my engineering design course. It is okay as far as CAD tutorials go. The text is confusing to follow at times. I would be hesitant to recommend it to fellow students.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: THINKING required here, not just a list of steps to follow. Review: Well written and understandable tutorial accurately updated for the latest version of Pro/E. Excellent presentation of the reasoning behind the detailed steps required to run Pro/E. Good examples used in each lesson followed by a checklist testing reader understanding. A challenging assembly project is included that is made up of parts created in each lesson.
