Summary: Left me out in the cold
Review: A pretty book but not one that invites me in or offers me inspiration for my own decorating. It's a book you keep at arm's length because you know it has nothing to do with your own life. Interesting that the author shows very expensive homes of wealthy people yet has designed a collection of getaway furniture for a low-end furniture maker whose products would never appear in the homes shown in the book. As for this book, I think it's aimed more at snob appeal than helping readers. I'd rather see inventively designed and decorated homes created for real people of the middle and upper-middle classes.

Summary: A Book that Inspires
Review: After looking through this book, i was inspired and enchanted by the diversity of the getaways presented by the author. To me, this book captures the true meaning of a getaway, and does a good job of showing the different aspects of what a getaway is...I was escpecially impressed and surprised with Michael Keaton's house in Montana, which is not what I would expect of a celebrity of his status.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Although the photos are lovely, the book does not provide any helpful information on how to create a "getaway" for people who live in real houses and have less than six figures to spend. There are lots of other fantasy books on the market like this one. Too bad it doesn't explore "new routes" to producing a getaway for the average person.

Review: Getaways provides 224 pages of large, gorgeous, color pictures. There are antiques, piles of books, bedcoverings, lamps, gardens, accents, and fixtures... there are a variety of styles displayed and too much to mention. Each picture creates its own feeling and it is easy to pick & choose to make your own perfect 'getaway'. We used some basic ideas for wallcoverings, flooring, curtains, and lighting to make our perfect little escape!

Summary: Getaways was a joyous and enormously satisfying book for me
Review: Getaways was a joyous and enormously satisfying book for me to photograph and write. As with my other 12 books, the journey took over two years of hard work, finding and photographing these unique spaces.

And, like my previous book - A Room of her Own - Women's Personal Spaces - Getaways celebrates wonderful homes and retreats, but not just for women! Families, couples and singles (regardless of gender), I discovered, shared this almost primal urge to have a haven, a "getaway." Whether it was a long cabin in the woods, a cottage by the sea or even a cozy suburban house lived in year-round, the getaways I was privileged to photograph were the sites for both personal renewal and great family reunions.

The best part of photographing these getaways was that they follow along with my philosophy about great design, which is that it's not about money or your pocketbook - it's really all about your personal vision -- your personal style! So whether you are creating a cozy getaway for your family in your own home, or a retreat for yourself in your garage or terrace, or perhaps a vacation home of your dreams, I hope you'll be inspired by my book.

From Katie Couric's elegantly relaxed home in upstate New York, and actor Michael Keaton's fishing shack in the Rockies, to the Donahue family's charming boat basin in Rye, New York, the getaways all shared what the Nobel Prize-winning author, Toni Morrison, said about her Hudson River retreat, also featured in my book, "It's a vision of a place you've had in your mind", she told me "and when you find yourself there, you recognize it."

The reader feedback I've received so far has been incredibly gratifying to me. The book has shown readers the importance of creating a getaway for their own physical and emotional well-being and has inspired them to use the stories in the book as inspirations to create their own unique sanctuaries and retreats.

Summary: A Ton Of Great Decorating And Design Ideas!
Review: I saw this book in an expensive little shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee last August, and later bought it cheaper over the internet. After reading several negative reviews here, and knowing the quality of this volume, I can't understand why people would not love this book. Contrary to what two reviewers state here, it is not a small volume and the photographs are extremely well done. They range from a picturesque dock out over a body of water to sunrooms, bedrooms, libraries, old desks, etc, with associated text, and most here can be done by people with any decent and modest budget.

I just wish I had this book last year when we had a house built, but it is useful now anyway. It is a treasure worthy of more than five stars.

Summary: I recommend a different book
Review: I wrote an earlier review of this book after I was a bit disappointed in it. In my search for books on getaways, I have found a new book called Second Home, which both my husband and I are enjoying. It mixes tours of interesting and beautiful homes with information on how we can do something to make our own second home dream come true.

Summary: Thanks for your support...
Review: It's great to hear so many wonderful comments about my new book in the first week of its publication. Getaways is my 13th book and you know what they say...lucky 13! I traveled across America in search of these wonderful retreats and getaways and I think they are the perfect antidote to the fast paced, frantic lives so many of us lead. I've also created a furniture line for Bassett Furniture which I hope will help you design a "getaway" in your own home! Thanks again for all your support!

Summary: A TRUE GETAWAY
Review: Ms. Madden captured the essence of getting away, and right in your own home!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it gave me several ideas that I could apply to my own living situation. It's fun to just step into the homes of people that we'll never meet. The photos and text were just great. Keep on writing Chris we love it!!!
