Rating: Summary: The Quintessential Forensic Art Textbook Review: Karen Taylor has succeeded with a seemingly impossible task. She has written the quintessential forensic art book that sets the standard for the discipline and for all future textbooks to come. My guess is that we will be deep into this century before there is another forensic art book of this professional caliber. Until now, the few so called forensic art books for sale were "vanity books." If they had any instructional value it ranged from none to very little. This is assuming they could be found because most were published by the authors. Taylor's book has well over 500 pages of illustrations and information that will be very helpful to the beginner as well as the veteran artist. There is so much pertinent material one wonders how Taylor kept it all in such logical order. Suffice to say there seems to be little, if anything, that Karen Taylor has left out. It has been meticulously researched, organized, referenced and indexed. FA & I is a must for any serious forensic artist but I think it can also prove to be a great aid for criminal lawyers, police departments, colleges (with criminal justice courses) and may even be helpful to some research psychologists. In my opinion, we will not see another forensic art textbook of this high professional quality in our lifetime, that is, unless Karen Taylor writes it. Kudos Karen.

Rating: Summary: Forensic Art and Illustration Review: Karen Taylor's much anticipated text on forensic art happily lives up to the highest expectations. Karen is preeminent in the field and one of the few people practicing today who has professional experience in ALL aspects of forensic art including composite illustration, postmortem restoration, photographic superimposition, age progression, two and three dimensional facial approximation and courtroom testimony. The production design of the book is excellent, the text clearly written and easy on the eyes, the illustrations, not surprisingly, superb and the references exhaustive. Chapters 11 and 13, co-authored with Betty Pat. Gatliff (the "Grand Dame" of forensic facial reconstruction), will be especially appreciated by the students of these two distinguished international teachers -- which includes most of us! A detailed chapter by chapter analysis is not necessary since all are excellent. Karen has done a great service for all practicing and potential forensic artists. This book is now the definitive reference work (the "Bible") for the field.

Rating: Summary: Forensic Art and Illustration Review: I have been an artist for over 20 years. I started drawing when I was 12 years old and got better as an artist as each year went by. I am very interested in Forensic Art, Facial reconstruction and Illustration. I purchased this book last year "Forensic Art and Illustration" and I just love it! The author, Karen T. Taylor is very talented in what she does and explains herself in a very simple way so everyone can understand her. This is the first book I have found to be very beneficial to me. It is like a bible to me, when ever I have a question, I then turn back to this book. I recommend this book to anyone who is in the field of Forensic Art! It is one of the best books around. Thank you for publishing an excellent book that has helped me immensely!!!
Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended!!! Review: This book is absolutely essential for anyone interested in forensic facial art. It contains a wealth of information that is presented in an easy-to-understand manner. The author has obviously researched her craft in great depth, and she is happy to pass along the information she has learned over the years. Her collaboration with Betty Pat Gatliff and Dr. David Glassman further adds to the textbook, and I have not found any other book that can compare to this one. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: A Serious Book for Serious Artists Review: This book should be required for any serious artist of the human face. Even though it is written for those artists working "in the trenches" helping law enforcement clear the streets, it is an invaluable study of the human face. Karen shows in detail the aspects of aging, bone structure, anatomy and a myriad of topics useful and interesting for the artist. Her superb organization of this complex subject is easily understood by scientist and non-scientist alike. She brings such professionalism and caring attention to detail that what can be scary and difficult to understand becomes clear and non-threatening. Those of us, who have been lucky enough to have learned from this great woman are now happy that she has brought this area of artistic endeavor to the light. Forensic art now has a "textbook" and the legitamacy it deserves. As the past president of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, I know what scientific artists, along with forensic artists and medical artists have suffered at the will of the "Artistic Community", who have regarded us as maybe not "True" artists, in the Fine Art sense. While this can be argued on both sides, those artists working in these feilds are in actuality, scientists and artists at the same time. Karen Taylor certainly is one of the stars. Her book will become a classic and should be in every serious artist's library.
Rating: Summary: Very Thorough and Helpful Book--For Novelists, Too! Review: As a leader in the field of forensic art, Karen Taylor has written an excellent book--not only for those studying the field, but also for suspense/mystery writers who are writing about the field of forensic art. I have lauded Taylor in the Acknowledgments page of my novel, Brink of Death, and have continued to use information from her book in subsequent stories in my Hidden Faces suspense series about a forensic artist. A researching author can know that he/she is in very good hands while relying on the information in Taylor's book. All aspects of forensic art are covered, with many illustrations and examples from Taylor's own work around the country. Suspense/mystery novelists, do yourself a favor and spend the money on Forensic Art and Illustration.
