Rating: Summary: A rich source of fascinating information Review: I have been interested in the work of Delano and Aldrich for a number of years, and this book provides the best information I have been able to get so far. The descriptions are deep and serious. I also liked the great pictures. The impact of their work is historic to say the least. This is a must read.

Rating: Summary: Perfection Review: I wish all books on noted architects where this good. Mr. Sterns preface at the beginning of the book is astute. This book is a perfect combination of archival and current photos and the history of the buildings are well researched and thorough. The color photos are vivid and well executed and the archival photos are well chosen. So many of these books just give you archival photos and are not researched as well as one would hope. This book is a blueprint for how these type of books should be presented. This beautiful book is well worth the money and at these prices that's high praise indeed.
Rating: Summary: A Well-Rounded and Intellectual Anthology... Review: Peter Pennoyer and Anne Walker have successfully put together a well-rounded and intellectual anthology in their book The Architecture of Delano and Aldrich. This thoroughly illustrated book traverses the duo's career - from their beginnings in the renown traditional firm of Carrére and Hastings to their eclectic bouts with traditional architecture within their own firm. Like the Vitruvian ideal of beauty, for which Delano and Aldrich held fast to in their architecture, Pennoyer and Walker respect that maxim, and adhere to it throughout the full 200+ pages. This book would be a welcome addition to any private library.
Rating: Summary: A rich source of fascinating information Review: This book on Delano & Aldrich is a beautiful and well-researched monograph of an important early 20th century New York City architectural firm. Not only is it worth buying to look through, but I found the book very well written, thorough, and engaging. I would say it is a must-have for the architectural historian and enthusiast, as well as for anyone with an interest in the changing face of New York City in the early 20th century. Thoroughly researched and beautifully photographed, it covers the work of Delano & Aldrich from elegant club-houses to town and country houses, institutional buildings and LaGuardia Airport. The book presents the work of this important American architectural firm in a formal yet highly readable format - drawing on a vast amount of research, historical documentation including photographs and drawings, and rich contemporary color photographs. The text offers analytical description and historical context; the photographs speak for themselves of D&A's fascinating and varied body of work. Congratulations to its authors Peter Pennoyer and Anne Walker!

Rating: Summary: a bait and switch Review: this book was so disappointing that i had no doubt 5 minutes after i looked through it that i would return it. from the cover, i expected a book rich in color photographs of elegant interiors -- in +addition+ to the historical black and whites. there are a measley handful of color photos, all placed at the very beginning of the book before the book even gets underway (before chapters, just after the intro, something like that). what a bait and switch! there are enough existing delano and aldrich structures to have procured colored photos -- whether existing or comissioned explicitly for this book. the black and white photos also disappoint a bit. caveat lector -- i have not read the book, as its use to me was at least 50% in part a pictoral guide. it may be of some value for those who can forgive it its pictoral faults.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: What a fabulous insight into the Architecture firm of Delano & Adrich. This book with its beautiful photographs and engaging essay provide an invaluable tool for all architectural enthusiasts: from the average architecture buff to those involved in scholarly research. I'm most impressed that the authors not only sought to perform research on the buildings themselves, but moreover, examined the partners and the social influences of the times. I feel we gain so much from the writers thru their experience of having read Delano's letters in archive at Yale! This book should stand as a model for future chronologist of architectural history. It is truly a wonderful presentation - the best that I've seen published to date. Congratulations.
