Summary: Sears homes are treasures in a community.
Review: I've read this book not once but several times, and I still have to refer to parts of it over again. There is so much information contained in this book, it will take you awhile to absorb it. As a result of reading Rosemary's book, I got out my camera and have started taking her book and my camera everywhere I go. I get very excited to drive by a house that I suspect to be a Sears Modern Home. It's like discovering a treasure!

Summary: Rosemary Thornton's 'The House that Sears Built'
Review: If I wasn't interested in Sears homes before, I definitely am now! This illustrated book makes me want to scour the city to see if there are any of these homes here in Texas! The book is very well written....in a manner that the lay person can understand. Her knowledge and passion for Sears homes is most evident in her writing. I've had the pleasure of communicating with Ms. Thornton, and she is delightful and most willing to share her wealth of information.

Summary: Interesting book
Review: Our family owns a Sears house that will be sold this year. My mother died last April at the age of 98 and had lived in the house since it was built by my father and grandfather in 1930. My parents were 3rd generation Americans and had one of the names listed on Page 116. They were not immigrants, as was assumed by their name. The house is in excellent condition, but family members all have homes in different cities and do not want the hassle of keeping it rented and seeing it destroyed byrenters.
Sears homes are the very best quality not available in new homes
now. I have several books about them and wish I could find the
75 page instruction book. I have the original blueprints.

Summary: "The Houses That Sears Built" - a good read
Review: Rose Thornton's book is an excellent personal and interesting account of Sears houses , especially in the Illinois area of the U.S. It is written with personal interest and conviction and provides information not found in "Houses by Mail" which was a catalogue but with little personal information.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants information and interesting personal accounts about Sears homes. It is interesting reading and very informative at the same time.
I have a very special interest in mail order houses as I authored a similar book in Canada entitled "Catalogue Houses; Eatons' and Others" Eatons was to Canada what Sears is to the US.

Review: Rose Thorton has achieved what few writers have been able to do. Hold my husband's attention. This book has so many interesting facts and tidbits that you can pick it up at any given time and find out something new. A must read for anyone interested in Sears homes or our history.
