Rating: Summary: Using values as a guide Review: Our 13 year old cat died today after a quick downhill slide from kidney failure. I am grateful for your book's encouragement to determine what values we want to express and transmit such as with regard to death (an example stands out to me involving two sisters and their children). We have been very open about what is going on and have had a four year old take lots of time to nurture the cat in his illness, knowing how important it was to make him feel comfortable and loved and to say good-bye. This is not how I was raised. I lost my father in childhood and nobody talked about it; they were grateful if I did not bring it up. Your book encouraged us to be deliberate and to develop a shared way of handling the situation with our daughter. I am sure this is only one event in which I'll be affected by your work, and I'm sure I'm only one of many who will be deeply affected.
Rating: Summary: Deeply moving, inspirational, transformative & practical Review: This book is deeply insightful, moving and practical with regard to clarifying what one believes about life's most essential issues, and incorporating these beliefs into day to day parenting. Our 13 year old cat died very recently after a quick downhill decline from kidney failure. I am so grateful for this book's encouragement to determine what values we want to express and transmit, including ones as important as dealing with death (an example stands out to me involving two sisters and their children). This book gave us a great deal of insight and courage to be very open about what transpired as the cat declined, and to successfully encourage our four year old daughter to take lots of time to actively nurture the cat in his illness, knowing how important it was to make him feel comfortable and loved and to say good-bye. She continues to openly process our cat's death, her feelings about it, and many aspects of death without hesitation. This is not how I was raised. I lost my father in childhood and nobody talked about it. They were grateful if I did not bring it up so I remained silent, to their great relief. I continued this family value and practice through the early parenting of my own much older children. But this book has now encouraged us to be deliberate in developing a positive, shared way of handling the situation with our youngest child. I know this is only one event in which I (and I'm sure many others) will be deeply affected by this book.
