Description:
Do you experience panic attacks --rushes of fear, accompanied by intense physical sensations? In 10 Simple Solutions To Panic, two Ontario psychologists specializing in the treatment of panic present ten self-help strategies. The authors begin by explaining what a panic attack is and how start conquering fear by making a commitment to change. Next you track your panic symptoms, learn to replace anxious thinking with realistic thinking, and test your new way of thinking by exposing yourself to panic situations and physical sensations. Later chapters cover retraining breathing, reducing stress, and choosing effective medications. This small book (142 pages) offers a lot of information and direction. Each chapter includes several exercises--questions that you answer in a journal--to help you understand and move through the points of the chapter and do your own work. Perhaps the book would have benefited from more explanation of how to do some of the exercises, with a bit more hand-holding as you work through some uncomfortable ideas and emotions. The writing style is clear, though not particularly warm. This book is best used in conjunction with talk therapy rather than alone, although just reading it can clarify issues for people with panic attacks and their loved ones. --Joan Price
