Description:
With all the literature about dysfunctional families, sometimes an injection of hope and joy is just what a reader needs. In The Power of Family Love: True Stories of Love and Courage, authors Samantha Glen and Mary Pesaresi have compiled an anthology that is simultaneously cheerful and tearful. Glen and Pesaresi have arranged these strong and moving tales (some written by the narrators, some narrated to the authors) into themes: Ties that Bind, Strength, Kindred Spirits, and so on. Readers hear of a non-athletic mother who coaches her children in baseball three days a week until the neighborhood jock finally asks them to play; an awkward 11-year-old girl who "overhears" her glamorous aunt complimenting her beautiful eyes; a woman returning to visit her ailing, senile father and discovering the love behind his gruff exterior; and a 15-year-old boy, sullen in his mask of adolescence, who saves a convent of nuns from a fire. Saccharine prose would have destroyed these 50 stories, but the light touch of Glen and Pesaresi effectively keeps the focus on the most important thing: the moment each narrator realizes the depth and importance of family ties. --Ericka Lutz
