Review: I was visiting my sister when I observed her five year old daughter, Kristy, setting the table for supper....I asked her if she was doing that for her allowance...she turned around and lefted her shoulders and told me very matter-of-factly, "There are just some things you have to do for the family." I have never forgotten that candid and sure declaration. I was hearing her Mom, my sister, Carol. Kristy had learned and totally accepted the expectation that she had a role to play in the smooth functioning of their family. Kristy is now married and expecting her first baby--a girl. I am confident that one day about five years from now I will receive, from a tiny little girl, a very assurred, "There are just some things you have to do for the family."House Rules is a collection of all the things I wish I had remembered to do for those around me throughout my life. As a teen, my focus was on my hopes and dreams. As a young adult, I was very intense and focused on my career adventures. Toward middle adulthood, with ailing parents, I finally started realizing how important these very dear people were in my life...and how strongly I wished that I had been a better, more involved daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin. This book is a reminder to everyone out there to treasure the ones around you. Small gestures like the ones in House Rules are subtle expressions of feelings for each family member's worth. And isn't that what we all want most in life, a realization that others see us as very important someones to be cherished? It is my hope that this little book will be a reminder that..."There are just some things you have to do for the family!" Thank you, Nancy Chupp
