Rating: Summary: This book can make a difference! Review: I am 16 years old and have a good relationship with my parents, but my mom and I decided to read this book together after seeing the authors on the Oprah Winfrey Show. We saw a chance to make our relationship even better. I only had to read half the book, as Journey wrote half for kids and her mom wrote the other half for parents. Sometimes my mom and I would read the chapters together, and we found the tools, tricks, and techniques for parents and kids really work! I think all kids deserve to have a good relationship with their parents. This book can make the differnence.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful tool in learning how to deal with teens. Review: I found Cool Communication to be full of sound advice. There is not another book written by both a teenager and a parent on how to maintain trust, harmony, and love in the parent/child relationship. Using some of the simple techniques the Henkarts suggest have already made a huge difference in my relationship with both my son and my daughter. I highly recommend this book to anyone with kids.
Rating: Summary: REQUIRED READING FOR PARENTS AND KIDS! Review: There are numerous books on parenting out there, but this one provides insight into the mind of a child/teenager through the writing of Journey who is a teenager herself. After reading her half of the book, I finally understand the way kids see the world, which will ultimately help me reach my kids in a way they can relate to. I finally have some techniques that work. The other half of the book, written by the parent, gave me great insight and compassion into creating more harmony in my family. This book certainly will help "bridge the gap." A must read for parents AND kids!
Rating: Summary: Complete permissiveness is as harmful as total strictness Review: There are so many wonderful books on parenting available today, but not much written from the kid's perspective. Journey wrote half of Cool Communication when she was just sixteen years old-giving kids between the ages of 7 and 18 the tools, tricks and techniques they need to gain more trust, understanding, and respect in their lives. I am her mom, and I wrote the other half of the book for parents of tots to teens. This book is written from our hearts and our experience in giving seminars and workshops to thousands of parents and kids. Raising children (and parents!) doesn't have to be difficult, it really can be a fun, respectful, honest, loving experience. Whether the issue is messy rooms, school, or friends, Cool Communication provides a much needed perspective from the parents' and the kids' sides in understanding the issue and, more importantly, how it can be resolved. Recently we were featured on the Remembering Your Spirit segment of the Oprah Winfrey Show, and we showed just how close the relationship between parent and child can be. The teenage years may be just around the corner for your child, or you may be in the middle of a stormy time. No matter what your situation at home may be, Cool Communication gives you simple, easy techniques that will make a difference in your family immediately. You owe it to yourself and to your children to all learn more about how to communicate more effectively, to love more fully, and to forgive and begin anew without any hard feelings. Tell your kids they only have to read half the book to have a happier family life! You can also read it together as a family. Whatever you do to make a difference in your family, just remember to KEEP COOL AND COMMUNICATE!
Rating: Summary: I wish my parents had this book when I was a teen... Review: There's two sides to ever story...Mother/daughter writing team, Andrea Frank and 16 yr. old Journey Henkart each tell theirs about a full range of modern teen/parent issues. But more significantly they offer a fresh structure and format by which teens and parents can openly and safely communicate difficult issues and express complex feelings. They offer insight into negotiating fair terms and bounderies about dating, grades, and domestic responsibilities and in the process show how to develop warmer, closer bonds. A really helpful book best shared by parents and teens together.
Rating: Summary: Unique and extremely helpfull Review: This is the only book I read that is useful both for parents and teenagers. The fact that the teenager's point of view is not something "imagined" by an adult trying to think like a teenager, but expressed by the teenager herself, and how well, is really unique. Great reading!
Rating: Summary: Praise for this book from Deepak Chopra Review: We'd like to share the following quote about COOL COMMUNICATION just received from Deepak Chopra, author of THE PATH TO LOVE and THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS FOR SUCCESS:"COOL COMMUNICATION will help both parents and children in establishing a nurturing and healthy relationship. I highly recommend it."
Rating: Summary: learn how to communicate with your parent/child. Review: Witty and right on it is. As parents and even as children no one teaches us how to talk to each other, and especially when a bad thing happens, we do not know how to communicate. The Cool Communication book is insightful into each domain of the parent-child relationship. From the young person's point of view, there is a real peer approach to dealing with those "parents" and the same is true for the parents. The main theme is to talk. Do it. There is no need to be afraid to approach each other and begin to communicate openly. This was a book that can really help with the problem of not being afraid to talk with (not at) your parent/child. Read it. You won't be disappointed!
