Rating: Summary: Read if you care about raising children Review: Dr. Marshall makes a powerful and convincing argument to stop spanking. He gives examples of the negative effects and unwanted results of spanking, pointing out for example how easy it is for even the well-intentioned to go too far with spanking and end up in abusing. In its place, his documented research offersalternatives to spanking that are effective. The book is easy to read, and I have learned valuable information on things I could have done and taught differently. The one weak point in his argument, however, is his discussion of the meaning of the Biblical "spare the rod and spoil the child." Although I continue personally to struggle with this question, I nevertheless have found the book to be very positive in helping parents with disciplining their children, and it has improved my awareness of the negative effects of spanking. As both a professional licensed counselor and parent, I highly recommend this book. Michelle M. Bruner MA, PC, LPC
