Rating: Summary: The Nursing Home Market Review: This book provides a comprehnsive overview of all of the leading studies of the nursing home market. Rhoades then identifies and classifies all the critical variables on both the demand and supply side of the market. These are then combined in a series of to which 1987 data is fitted. Rhoades performs both bivariate and multivariate analysis and then draws conclusions about the statistical significance of the variables. Although the basis for the analysis is theoretical and statistical, the complexities are minimized and the slim volume is very readable. There is a comprehensive bibliography and an extensive, annotated listing of data sources. The book was based on Rhoades' doctoral dissertation. The book is not a "how to" volume on how to manage a nursing home. Nor does the book address the public policy issues relating to the provision and financing of nursing home care. It is narrowly focused on the demand and supply condition in the market for nursing homes. The volume succeeds for those interested in the economics of the industry. For those looking for a broader perspective, other studies will have to be examined.
