Rating: Summary: A real support toward successful learning Review: After many years of working with children of all ages in school settings, I commend the author on making the "secrets" of school success so doable. This easily readable book should be a must for parents at the beginning of the school year. It holds many practical applications to help a child be a successful student. If parents were to follow only a portion of the suggested "tips", their children's 180 days in school each year would go much smoother.

Rating: Summary: Parents are the key to their child's school success. Review: Hi! I'm Bob Weyhmuller, author of "Beyond the Bus Stop: 180 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in School." I'm flattered that you stopped by to look at my book.I've been a special education teacher and educational consultant for twenty-two years. During that time, I've participated in over a thousand parent-teacher conferences. One thing I've learned from those meetings is that parents are hungry for advice. So I wrote the book to give parents simple, easy-to-use tips on how to help their child succeed in school. My book doesn't contain jargon or educational gobbledygook, just practical, hands-on suggestions that every parent can put into practice immediately. (And most tips will cost you nothing.) Ask any teacher what makes a successful student, and I guarantee that somewhere near the top of the list will be "parent involvement." Kids whose parents take an active role in their education, succeed. That means volunteering at school (Come on, no matter how busy you are, you can afford 45 minutes a year!). It also means supervising homework and expanding your child's learning skills. But don't worry, it's easier than you may think. I'll show you how in my book. My wife, Arlene (a speech/language specialist with over 25 years in public education) reminds me that I'm an educator first and author second. So I'm compelled to share one tip with you, regardless if you buy my book or not. Here it is. Read to your child every day. Children who read, succeed. Reading is the single most important skill a child needs in order to do well in school. And reading to your child every day is the single most important activity you can do to help your child become a better reader. Here's another benefit that reading to your child provides-- together time. Read to your four-year-old and she'll crawl up in your lap. Enjoy the smell of her hair and the softness of her skin. Read to your thirteen-year-old and he'll snuggle close and comfy. When was the last time you felt his heart beat? You don't get that by watching sitcoms together. In addition to supporting your child's reading, "Beyond the Bus Stop: 180 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in School" covers fourteen other areas, some of which are: writing, math, social skills, studying for tests, and planning after-school fun. There are 180 tips, one for each day of the school year. Well, if I don't stop rambling, this will become my next book. Best wishes to you and your child; may you both succeed in all you do. To buy my book, just put it in your shopping cart at Amazon.com. Then, email me and let me know how you liked it.

Rating: Summary: This valuable book should be in every home. Review: The following review was written by syndicated columnist, Sid Ascher and appeared in Sid Ascher's World 8/5/99. Mr. Weyhmuller is a distinguished learning disabilities teacher and consultant with more than 20 years experience in public education. His valuable book should be in every home. He is definitely correct when he writes, "Children who read, succeed. Reading is the single most important skill a child needs in order to do well in school. And reading to your child every day is the single most important activity you can do to help your child become a better reader." The easy to read volume was designed to be handy in size and is simple and conversational in thought and presentation.
Rating: Summary: Beyond the Bus Stop: 180 ways to Help YourChild Suceed in Sh Review: This little book is a real gem for parents. I have used it as a gift for parents of children just entering school. It speaks to the issue of learning and assisting your child. It is written for parents, not for professionals and it allies the fears of many parents who try to help their children. The personal anecdotes help parents to identify.
