Review: As a parent and a former teacher, I want to help my children learn to love reading. So many books have been written on this subject, but most of them have a bit of an axe to grind. They promote only THEIR OWN philosophy about the "best" way to teach reading--phonics vs. whole language vs. literature-based instruction. That's why Shirley McEnnis's book stands out, far above the crowd. She understands that every child has his own way of learning. She therefore advises for a BALANCED approach to reading instruction. I wish I had had this book when I was still teaching, but I am DELIGHTED to have it now that I have young, new readers at home. It offers tips, guidance, and easy-to-follow suggestions for games and activities that make reading FUN. Along the way, it has also built up my confidence.
