Rating: Summary: A Comprehensive Review of Twinning and High Order Pregnancy Review: This is an impressive medical book that focuses on the range of medical science related to twin and higher order development and birth. It is heavily illustrated, and shows both normal and problematic consequences of multiple pregnancy. I am a lay person, interested in twinning as I'm married to an identical twin, have a son who's fathered twins, and daughter soon to give birth to yet a second set; I wanted to understand what is known about familial twinning, and this book certainly filled the bill for my interests. It deals with epidemiology, pathology, genetics, and biology, covering an incredible breadth and wonder of what is known about twinning, and also a depth of its problems and complications and tragedies. It is rather heavy reading, with many medical terms and presumptions of background that suggest it only for those seriously interested in a depth of detail on its subject areas. But it delivers, it explains. The book makes a very clear case for the early diagnosis of twinning, and shows how very important it is to exactly diagnose those twins subject to significant complication: late-splitting "identical" (monozygotic) twins. The book shows care-givers exactly how to diagnose, what to look for as normal and abnormal, where to look for it. This isn't a book for a casual reader, but is good for someone interested in significant depth. As a medical text, the reader should know that some of the pathology photos of problems are very graphic in their documentation. I was looking for a thorough review of what is known about twinning. I found it here.
