Summary: A Must Read!!
Review: As a baby boomer I totally enjoyed, and appeciated, Orphaned at 39.

It is a true story of a middle-aged baby boomer who gets involved with the health care of his elderly father. During the process, the author tells a moving story about how the experience has so incredibly affected him.

The author, while telling this story, also helps the reader with how best to deal with the many issues that face a care-provider -Medicare, locating a quality nursing home, dealing with medical insurance companies, and many other pertinent issues are discussed from a "been there, done that" perspective.

The book also provides many (and I mean many) touching stories about his relationship with his now deceased (hence, the "Orphan" moniker)parents. Many a tear was shed while I read this book.

But the message of the book is simple - WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF OUR PARENTS AS WELL AS THEY TOOK CARE OF US WHILE WE WERE CHILDREN!!!

This is an awesome book - a real page-turner that you will not want to put down.

Summary: This guy deserves a medal !
Review: Excellent book. Purely excellent. I couldn't put it down. Read it in one sitting.

The author bares his soul in this story of family and unconditional love. While taking care of an ill parent, Mr. Eide deals with every twist and turn that life handed him - and he does it with courage and grace.

In this book, everything is laid out for the reader (and the world) to see. But that is also what makes it such an enjoyable book to read as we can all relate.

I loved this book, and you will too.

Summary: Well Worth The Money
Review: From the beginning chapter, to the very end, what an enjoyable book to read. The author describes how his life changes when he must and wants to care for his ill father. I found myself laughing and crying all in one chapter.

Terrific reading, especially for those with elderly parents. This book is well worth the money.

Summary: A trip through the past, present and future for Baby Boomers
Review: Having recently gone through the loss of my own father, this book hit very close to my heart many times. I laughed, I cried and for me reading this book was like sitting down with a cup of coffee and old friend talking about your feelings. The story telling ability of this author keeps your interest throughout the entire book. His powerful way with descriptions makes you feel as though you are sitting in his kitchen with him as a child. This is the first book that combined very valuable information with a life story in a way that will make you re-think your own personal readiness for what life deals all of us. My mom is a 75 year old widow now, and went out and purchased this book and could not put it down. Reading it helped her realize she was not alone in what she has experienced in the last year. If you are a baby boomer, if you have elderly parents, or if you just love to read a great book, this is a MUST READ. I hope the author will continue to write, as he obviously has a gift for great story telling.

Summary: Great Book for Extra Credit
Review: I am going into the 8th grade. I receive extra credit for next school year by reading five books during the summer. One of the books that I chose for my summer reading program was Orphaned at 39 because I like to read true stories about people who do nice things for other people. I like to read books about people who do good works for society. I think that this author is a nice person. I like how he sacrificed his job and his wedding plans to take care of his dad. A lot of people don't do the right thing but Mr. Eide did. He inspired me to be a better person to my parents.

Summary: I just couldn't get through the bad grammar- - -I'm sorry!
Review: I came to this book wanting to learn of Eide's struggles with and understanding of his parents' deaths. My mom died this spring after a 5+ -year battle with Alzheimer's, and I needed to hear someone else's journey. The reviews encouraged me. However, I was worried when the grammar on the back page ("it's" for "its", mis-hyphenations, etc.) was egregiously bad. It turns out that all the editing is bad. The book is filled with underlines, italics, invented hyphenations, sentence fragments, mispunctuation, misspellings- - - I"m sorry, but I just couldn't read it. Who edited this thing? It reads at a bad 6th-grade essay level. I am not a grammar OR a writing fanatic, though I appreciate an excellent standard in both. But sadly this was just unreadable, distracting, and quite unprofessional. I didn't get the book's message, and I wish it were otherwise! I would have loved to get what Eide had to say, and I tried for many pages, but it was just impossible for me.

Summary: A wonderful story of love and loyalty
Review: I connected with this book immediately and I was surprised to find these touching sentiments written by a man. These are very often the stories we hear from women. But this true story, written by a son, will move you and cause you to reflect on your own responsibilities in this life.

This author has been very honest, almost too honest at times. I admire his ability to hold nothing back and let the world know all that happens or could happen along the way in caring for your aging parents. The people in this story could be your own loved ones someday. It could even be you! It certainly made me think of my own sense of family. I am of the baby boomers generation and I know my time is coming.

RUN out and get a copy of this book! There is valuable information that I have never run across before. I especially liked the way the author put together his personal story with this information. You will want to share it with others and also keep it for reference.

Summary: Informative, yet a pleasurable story.
Review: I found this book to be both informative, as well as a marvelous story of family, friends and unforeseen circumstances.

The help that this author offers to adult care-providers, in the form of his past experiences, is beyond equal. But what also makes the book so appealing to read is the thought and care that he gives to telling a pleasurable story of how normal life can quickly throw us a curveball - causing even the best laid long-term plans to be discarded in order to provide care for an ailing parent.

Bravo! Excellent offering about life, and the challenges that it often presents!
