Rating: Summary: Nothing Revolutionary Review: . This kit comes with four items: . Parent Guide Book - This book contains information about development and learning in infants. It is very well organized and easy to read but the information is mostly just statistics. The few explanations that are offered are oversimplified. As a parent I am not looking for complex scientific theories (I probably would not understand them anyway) but I would like to know the 'whys and hows' of my child's development. There are many books out there that deal with infant development and if you really want to get into that you would be better off consulting those. What I did find extremely disappointing in this book were the recommended activites to stimulate your child. For example, the authors recommend that you make faces at your child, sing songs, give your child a rattle, play peek-a-boo, play pat-a-cake. Is there a single parent in any culture in the entire world that does not do all this intuitively? I was expecting something a little more ground-breaking. If you are looking for new games to play with your child I recommend "Baby Minds" by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn. It is full of much more fun and interesting games to play with children from newborns to three year olds. . Toy Buying Guide - Again, you don't really need this. Your common sense will suffice. The authors recommend a mobile, crib mirror, balls, blocks, stacking rings, nesting cups and all the other regular toys I am sure every child has in his/her toy box. They do tell you what kind of balls, blocks, and rings to buy and how to extend the life of the toy, which is a bit more interesting. . Baby Photo Rhyming Book - Although I read to my child several times a day, I haven't really had a chance to use this yet. It is just a simple photo album with rhyming cards that you insert. I think it would be a better idea to make one for yourself with your child. It would be easy enough and would be so much more personal for the both of you. My son is only four months old and already loves books and I do plan on using this (in addition to making one). I am hoping he will enjoy both. . Music CD - Excellent! The only thing about this entire kit that I am truly enthusiastic about. It has the usual classical pieces by Bach, Mozart, Handel but also has world music from countries like Russia, China, Ireland. The selections are complex and rich and my baby listens attentively with eyes wide open trying to catch all the different sounds. Unlike other music geared towards children, this is something I enjoy listening too as well, and often catch myself tapping a foot. I do not plan on purchasing the next two kits, but if they sell the music CDs separately will definitely get them for my baby (and myself!). . I would not recommend this product. The packaging is pretty slick with words like "brilliant", "genius", and "latest brain research" which are meant to play on parents' sense of insecurity and desire to give their child the best. Chances are if you are playing, talking and reading to your baby, exposing him/her to music and toys, and hugging a lot, you are already doing everything this book says! Best of luck.
