Summary: Myths of the Super Parent: Finding the Power of Real Parent
Review: I strongly and whole-heartedly recommend Elizabeth Dybell's Myths of the Super Parent: Finding the Power of Real Parenting. Finally, down-to-earth, very useable advice for heading down that scary, confusing road called parenthood!

This is intelligent, frank writing. Dr. Dybell devotes a chapter to each of her ten "myths" of parenting, providing analogies and suggestions, using many examples from her years of first-hand experience. I thoroughly enjoyed her wit and humor and found myself chuckling as I read........and then read on for more! Although one does not need to read the book from cover to cover to gain insight, this is such good reading, you'll probably find yourself reading straight through anyway.

Myths of the Super Parent is the perfect gift for both new and "seasoned" parents. This is a wonderful reference, an encyclopedia of ideas and, most importantly, even some peace of mind!

Summary: Excellent Guidance for Parents
Review: Myths of the Super Parent is an excellent resource for all parents. In this practical and easily read book, Dr. Elizabeth Dybell identifies some of the popular myths of parenting that are widely held in today's society. Dr. Dybell discusses each myth in detail and then provides activities to dispel them. Her personal anecdotes, as a psychologist who has worked with children and families for over fifteen years, provide humor and insight.

Those of us who feel the pressure to be super parents can find practical and intelligent reassurance in this book. We can also find affirmation for our instincts that tell us to go against the flow and be the parents we really want to be.

If you are looking for parenting guidance that is based on solid knowledge of child development and psychology, I strongly recommend Dr. Dybell's book. She presents a compelling case for parents being role models, making the decisions parents should make and remaining predictible and consistent in their behavior toward their children. It is a fortunate child who is raised in this manner.

Summary: It is okay to parent
Review: When you are ready to accept that you are a parent responsible for raising a child, this book is for you. When you begin to suspect that TV families are really fantasies or that the Super Parents that you see seem to have some goal other than raising children, then it is time to get this book.

Dr. Dybell explains that one can raise Real Kids that can function as successful adults without having to subscribe to some mythic program of Super Parenting. She takes our idealized images of what the perfect parent should be like and breaks them down into concrete examples of how normal people can accomplish the true goal of raising children to be responsible, moral adults.

One must'nt suscribe to every word of the book to derive value. Dr. Dybell allows that there are differences from one family to another and that recommended actions need to be tailored to the needs of each family. She gives guidelines that free one from pursuing false goals that have little to do with the job of being a real parent.

Read and reread this book. It can be edifying to see why some of the things that you are already doing are good and it can open your mind to other behaviors that can improve how your family lives its day-to-day lives.
