Rating: Summary: Just another rehash, we're afraid Review: A nice volume by a well-educated Dr. with Dr. Halstead's blessing, but (unfortunately) it is appears to be just a re-hash or compilation of well-known information. We found little one could consider "new" or "cutting-edge" for such a recent Publication date. We were also disappointed to see so little credit and but minimal referral given to that excellent PPS Guru, Dr. Bruno. :-(
Rating: Summary: Post Polio Syndrom Review: An excellent, informative book! If you're a polio survivor, it is a MUST read!
Rating: Summary: Great Post-Polio Information! Review: Dr. Silver presents a lot of information about Post-Polio Syndrome in an easy to read form. You can tell that she has had a lot of experience with Polio survivors in her training and at her PPS Clinic in Massachusetts. She discusses topics that other books have missed: nutrition, various myths and misunderstandings, and the realities of facing the future with PPS. Her goal seems to be to to provide factual information for those with PPS in order to function as well as possible with this chronic condition. I agree that it is essential to find a doctor/clinic that has experience with Polio survivors with PPS. It is essential that doctors have the information and resources needed so that they do no harm to already fragile Polio bodies. Often, one has to travel to find this kind of expertise. This book would be great for anyone who had Polio; but especially if you are experiencing new symptoms like pain, weakness, falling down, breathing or swallowing problems or fatigue. It would be a great book for any health care professional. It would be wonderful if more medical professionals had this kind of information about PPS, as they will probably be seeing more patients who had Polio and may need help dealing with PPS. As a Polio suvivor, I am pleased to have Dr. Silver's book in my personal library of Polio information.

Rating: Summary: The best read on Post Polio Review: This is the most current read on Post Polio and a must have book for everyone who has had Polio. There is a certain l'ennui in the PPS community - been there, read that, seen it all. Dr. Silver's book transcends the common and obvious. She makes the topics fresh and vital with her viewpoint and ideas. Her insights are useful. I wish I had read the book a year before. I could have saved myself considerable pain from over exertion. Needs a paperback so more people will read it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent tool for polio survivors Review: What an excellent tool Dr. Silver has given polio survivors and their families. She has written a comprehensive book on post polio beginning with the history of polio and post polio and continuing on to cover the topics important to our individual needs. She has organized the book in a manner that facilitates finding information quickly. Her writing style is very easy to read and the material is so complete that many times I felt she was talking directly to me. Upon completing the book, I felt encouraged by her optimism and had a better understanding of what was happening to my body and what I needed to do. Her credentials, click on "look inside", are impressive. The fact that she is a medical doctor at Harvard and is actively working with post polio patients is reassuring. She also has done extensive research and quotes many experts in the field. I feel she has given me the best information available. I have also read some of her articles at polio sites on the internet and found them to be very helpful. One that I found particularly interesting was "Polio Myths and Half-Truths". I hope she writes more!
