Rating: Summary: Outstanding Resource! Review: Michael Basso has delivered a resource that clearly expresses profound respect for teens, equity for all people of all races and religions, and the sincere belief backed by his success that all teens can make good decisions regarding their health, sex, and life. He is truly gifted as an educator and as a professional in the realm of health psychology and behavior, and appears to be responsible for many of the positive trends forming in adolescent health today. Michael Basso is thoughtful, real, and sensitive to the needs of teens and the adults who care for them. I use this resource everyday in my work with teens and the response is tremendous. Outstanding resource!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Resource For Teens Review: Michael Basso has really created a handbook that every teenager, teacher, and parent should own. In an approachable question and answer format, Basso outlines the most frequently asked questions about anatomy, relationships, contraception/STDs, and violence that he has experienced in his many years as a high school teacher. Particularly wonderful are the informative and often funny illustrations peppered throughout the book.I did find his weakest area to be the section on pregnancy and childbirth. (Episiotomy is NOT necessary for birth and numerous studies throughout the world has shown it to be an unnecessary procedure). I also took issue with his use of the word "AIDS" when most educators use "HIV" to describe this STD. I think that many teens (and adults) would not be able to put this book down - I know I couldn't!

Rating: Summary: Comprehensive Guide for Teens and Parents Review: Mr. Basso has written an excellent comprehensive guide on teenage sexuality with a few bonus topics such as depression and family dynamics. He uses language that is appropriate for teens and offers real-life responses for difficult situations. He provides web-site addresses to reliable resources for more information. There are a few typograhpics errors and omissions that I hope will be corrected in the 3rd edition. Finally, he attempts to create a multi-racial cover and cartoon depictions, but the majority of the characters in the cartoons are Caucasian. I hope the book will become more multi-racial in future editions.
Rating: Summary: How to raise successful parents! Review: That is my FAVORITE chapter!! The whole book is awesome and it has information you don't find anywhere else like how to prevent being abused by adults, what to look for in relationships-and look out for, but that part on how to get along better with my parents has been super. I don't know if it was because of the new things I tried so we don't argue so much, but there seems to be less tension and we talk more. I HIGHLY recommend this book to other teens who want to know the facts about sex, as well as how to get along better with parents.

Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect... Review: This is a great book about teenage sexuality. It has a ton of great information, including answers to the questions teens ask the most when it comes to this topic. There are a few reasons why I can't give this book five stars. First of all, the author often feels the need to explain what every word means. For example, whenever the word "urinate" was mentioned in the book, the author wrote "pee" in paranthesis after it. Only five-year-olds don't know what urinate means! I felt that he was speaking to the readers as though they did not understand the definition of the most common words. Other words he felt the need to explain were: deformities, defecate, nausea, and sheath. Another problem with this book was the fact that it had a lot of errors in spelling, grammar, etc. It was obviously not very carefully edited. Other than these few complaints, I feel that this book will help expand your knowledge of the concept of sexuality. Though I learned nothing new, it was a good way to get more details.

Rating: Summary: The best book for teens I've ever read! Review: Working as a health and sexuality educator in Miami, as well as being a mother of three, this book delivers the information teens really want to know in a way that is understandable and interesting to them. Another big plus is that this book has the most illustrations of any other book on the subject, which holds my students and teens attention as well. I always recommend this book to the staff personnel, teachers, parents and students I meet at the health facilities and schools I visit. This truly is an invaluable handbook!
