Rating: Summary: A Book For All Ages Review: As a 21 year old college student who is more than a few years away from being the parent of a teenager, I have gained a broad range of perspective from reading Tom McMahon's Teen Tips. Not only was I able to relate firsthand to many of the issues presented, but I also came to realize what a complex and educational experience it is for parents in cultivating nurturing relationships with their teens. I appreciated the personal accounts that are so prevalent in this book, as they help to make the approach more personal of the issues at hand. McMahon does not "sugar coat," oversimplify, or overdramatize the issues that he speaks about, which is refreshing and realistic in a time when all too many adults want to be a "pal" instead of a guide to teens. I will definitely keep this book so that I may refer to it in working with adolescents as a teacher, and in parenting teenagers of my own. There is a multitude of creative and loving strategies toward building healthy relationships with teenagers in Tom McMahon's book and I definitely recommend reading it to those who are teachers, and to those who work or live with a teenager.

Rating: Summary: Great book for anyone involved with teens! Review: I am a junior at CSUH, majoring in Human Development. I hope to work with children and young adults some day and have children of my own. Tom McMahon's book will come in handy in either sittuation. Teen Tips is great because it's not just one person giving one kind of advice to his readers. It's refreshing to read different ways of going through the motions with an adolescent, from the piont of view of experienced people. I've discovered ideas that I'd never thought of before. Many of the tips are bound to strike up wonderful discussions. Other highlights are the quotes from teens that are placed periodically throughout the book. Both parents and adolescents can benifit from this book. Happy Reading!

Rating: Summary: "Teen Tips" extra tip Review: I am a single mother, divorced with three children in this age catagory. While I found most of the tips helpful, I found the book lacking in advice for divorced parents. More than 50% of homes are now divorced and less than one chapter is dedicated to this issue. I would also like to add my own tip...never talk bad about your ex-spouse in front of the kids. This cuts like a knife into their very soul. The author has my permission to use this in his next revision. Carole V., Hayward, CA

Rating: Summary: Informative Teen Tips Review: I enjoyed reading Teen Tips and found it to be very informative for anyone exploring the topic of adolescents. McMahon provides a wonderful introduction that gets his readers ready to explore the true teen years. He covers all of the important aspects that one needs to reflect upon before interacting with a teen. Every section of his book includes Practical Parenting Tips (written by other parents), Adolescent Research (important current information about the topic), Parent Skills Builders (quick lessons for parents), and Teen Talk (teens giving their own advice for parenting tips). I found the Practical Parenting Tips and the Teen Talk to be the most helpful. These sections provided a more personal way to look at the topics and challenged me to recall my own experiences as a teen. Tom McMahon's book is well written and easy to understand.
Rating: Summary: Parents: answers you need are finally here! Review: I found Teen Tips,Tom McMahon, to be a very resourceful book for whatever stage of parenting you are in. I have shared this book with family and friends who are discovering the challenges of raising an adolescent. It is beneficial for parents to realize that thier situation is not unique, there are other parents who have experienced the same challenges(and survived). By being able to utilize some of the parental survial skills, and reaffirming my "parental rights" has been inspiring in connecting with teens in my family. I encourage parents to add this book to thier collection and use as your own personal referral. Thank you Tom McMahon!
Rating: Summary: excellent resource for parents Review: I had to read Tom McMann's Teen Tips for an adolescent class at csuHayward. I thought it was absolutly excellent. He had wonderful solutions to many problems that every adolescent and parent will go through. He also had parents of adolescents sent in their tips and had them in the book. This was great because it shows that this stuff that he is suggesting actually works. He also made suggestions that he thought were especially important such as listening to the adolescent, teaching them money management and how to pick the battles that you won't regrest later in their lives. I now have a eighteen month old son, and I know it is in the distant future, but I will definetly keep this book and refer back to it when the time come. I feel this is a essential book for any parent. Even if they are still young you will need and love it in the future. I wish my parents were able to use this book as I was growing up, especially the money management part. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I read this book for an adolescent class in college. This book provides great insight to the world of an adolescent. The tips that Tom McMahon presents are very much reasonable. I found myself reminiscing of my adolescent years. It helps to know that there are books like these out to help parents out with their teens. I work as a child care attendant, and I have already recomended this book to some of the parents I see. This book is definetely worth reading and recommending to parents on the path to their teen's years.
