Summary: One of the best books I've ever read.
Review: What can I say about this book? This is one of the best books I have ever read. This author did an excellant job writing this book. I was soo impressed by his writing style. I was very reluctant in buying this book. Boy was I wrong. This book deals with men and gives a lot of insight to why men are the way they are. This book helped me to understand soo many things about men that I really didn't know. The book deals with the Harris brothers whose father walked out 20 years ago and wants to make things right before he dies. It is soo much I could say about this book but it wouldn't do it justice. I was drawn to these three men and felt their pain. I would advise every women and especially fathers and all men to read this book. Looking forward to purchasing "Father Found".

Summary: ABONDONMENT BREEDS DISCONTENT
Review: This should be required reading for any father who decides to abandon his children, particulary his sons. I'ts the story of the lives of a man and his three very different adult sons and of how deeply the father's actions affected his sons' views of their own capabilities and responsibilities. THE HARRIS MEN shows what a devastating impact of being abandoned has on men's lives, and how no matter what level of success of failure they achieve, that impact is a controlling force. The book also gives a realistict look at what could happen when the father tries for a sudden reunion after a twenty year absence. Although we are left unclear as to why the father actually left years ago, the intent of the author was to show that's how children really feel. They never fully understand it. The novel develops the sons' characters well and shows a lack of direction in their personal goals. The message is that they've never gotten over the abandonment. THE HARRIS MEN is very emotional and you can feel the author's personal pain and anger. Although this books lacks the smoothness and cohesion marked by established writers, it explores an excellent, hardly-explored subject. Mr. Johnson has a bright future as a writer.

Summary: A Good Book But...
Review: The book was well written and it held my attention. However, many of the voices in the book sounded the same. The women were almost IDENTICAL. And it never tells you WHY the father/Austin left in the first place. I was never really emotionally attached to any of the characters. Again, it was a good first attempt but it was more like a second draft than a finished product. Caleb was the most interesting but his actions were so ridiculous it was difficult to read at times. It was impossible to like Austin, who ONLY showed TRUE compassion toward his father. Marcus was likeable. But I wanted to know more about him. We never get to really know Julius or Cathy either. Maybe the book should have began when the boys were small. And the end was very disappointing. I didn't know whether Julius had really made that offer to Sonya or was he just saying that to get Caleb interested in him. He didn't even know Jahlil's name. Anyway, I would recommemd the book. But I hope that the next book is better.

Summary: ENGROSSING READ
Review: The Harris Men is about three brothers who are abandoned by their father. Twenty years later after Julius (father) is diagnosed with cancer, he wants to reconcile with his sons and become a family for the short time he has left to live. That's the jist of this excellent written novel. In this absorbing tale we see the Harris men as three very distinctive individuals. Austin who is pompous and arrogant but what can you expect from a lawyer. Marcus the graphic artist who is the backbone of the family. Caleb who is a confused unemployed derelect. R.M. Johnson takes us into the Harris' homes and weaves a great story of forgiveness, struggle, unity, and love with all its complexities. This is one of the best books I've read in 2000. R.M. deserves his props-Excellent job.

Summary: Dynamic Drama expressing lives affected by abandonment
Review: The Harris Men the first novel written by R.L Johnson, introduces the life of Julius Harris who rudely abandons his children Austin, Marcus and Caleb at such young ages. Though Julius never gave his children an excuse for his absence, it has affected their choices in life. I really enjoyed this book and recommend that you read it. The extraordinary way R.L. Johnson writes, makes his story come alive in our hearts and reflects on what is going on around us. His characters are so realistic in some way shape or form that they seem like their related to us. Once you indulge in the unique story of Julius Harris you will come to know the sacrifices people make each day just to survive, you won't even believe that you finished this book in such a short amount of time.

Summary: Good Book, But Ending Was Disappointing
Review: I enjoyed the book tremendously, but wish there had been more interaction between Julius and his sons. It would have been better if Julius had appeared in the son's lives while they were going through their problems as opposed to after everything was said and done. On the whole, I think this was a great book and will definitely recommend it to my friends.

Summary: Should come with a "For All Men" sticker on the front.
Review: THE HARRIS MEN is a book that all men should read, especially any that have had to live without a father in their household. Although I had mine with me until the day he passed on, I still felt the effects of the Harris brothers and could relate on each level to each one. This book will make the reader take notice about their own life and how you can learn to forgive and move on with your life. Highly recommended.
