Summary: Comprehensive safety guide
Review: Child Safe covers virtually every area of child safety and all age groups in an easy-to-read, approachable style. Written by an emergency room physician, it is filled with common and not-so-common hazards and ways to prevent the calamities that can result from these dangers. The information is sobering, but indispensible, for parents, caregivers, and relatives. We gave copies to both sets of grandparents so that they would understand how much more we know since they raised their children, and to give them a resource for learning how to make their own homes "child safe." This kind of information can be received much better by a mother-in-law, for example, when it comes from an "expert."

Summary: CHILD SAFE is a must have book for everyone.
Review: Did you know that certain household objects like 5-gallon buckets, window dressing pull-cords, clothing drawstrings and cradles can be deadly to an infant? CHILD SAFE, the book you are reading about, covers all these topics and much, much more. CHILD SAFE teaches the reader about hazards to children both inside and outside the home and it gives detailed advice on how to protect your children when dealing with swimming pools, automobiles, playgrounds, toys and so on.

Hello. My name is Mark Brandenburg, MD. I am an emergency physician at the Trauma Emergency Center (TEC) of St. Francis Hospital in Tusla, Oklahoma. The TEC is Oklahoma's busiest ER and serves as the regional pediatric trauma center. Our staff cares for thousands of injured children each year.

I am writing this review to give you some more information about CHILD SAFE and to tell you why this book is essential for every parent, grandparent, nanny, babysitter, teacher and child care provider. For years we in the medical profession have been well aware of the many hazards faced by children of all ages. Unfortunately, this information was never pooled together into a single resource for the general public- until now. It did not take me very long to realize that this type of information can be life saving to children. After 3 1/2 years of tedious research and writing, I am pleased to present the best child safety book available- CHILD SAFE: A Practical Guide for Preventing Childhood Injuries.

Allow me to briefly explain how this book is arranged. The first half of CHILD SAFE covers those causes of injury that are not specific to a particular age-group (i.e. dog bites, carbon monoxide poisoning, lead poisoning, etc.). The second half of CHILD SAFE is divided into age-specific chapters that enable the reader to very quickly find information necessary to protect a child in a specific age category. For instance, in the Infant chapter I discuss SIDS, suffocation injuries, drowning, etc. In the Toddler chapter, I discuss those injuries specific to that age-group (i.e. auto-pedestrian injuries, poisoning, choking, etc.). In the School-Age chapter, I discuss those injuries such as drowning in lakes and rivers, street drugs, guns and violence.

The last chapter is a very unique feature- Product Recalls. This is a compilation of recalled products that have been found dangerous to children during the last 4 years. This information is organized by product category.

Some of the other unique features of CHILD SAFE are as follows:

*CHILD SAFE is very easy to read. For each type of injury, I cover the mechanism and general statistics involved. Then, in very practical terms, I show the reader exactly what is needed to eliminate the hazards in order to prevent that specific type of injury from occurring.

*CHILD SAFE is the only child safety book endorsed by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), or by any medical organization for that matter.

*CHILD SAFE is the first such book written by a medical professional. As an emergency physician who sees and treats children with all types of injuries, I feel very qualified to have written this book for you.

*CHILD SAFE is comprehensive.

*CHILD SAFE is organized into age categories and educates the reader on the unique developmental consideration of each age-group.

I hope you will give this book a thorough reading. I guarantee you will learn more about preventing childhood injuries than you ever thought possible. Good luck and always remember, BE CHILD-SAFE!

Summary: Eye-Opening Book!
Review: Dr. Brandenburg identifies in his book many potential hazards to the health and safety of children. I am grateful to him for writing this book. I have investigated abuse and neglect allegations concerning children for nearly ten years. There have been many cases in which I arrived at a hospital or home to discuss with a child's parent(s) or caretaker the cause of serious injuries or death to their child. Many children sustain injuries which are the result of abuse or neglect. Other cases, however, are the result of an accident which could have been prevented had the parent/caretaker been aware of a potential hazard to the child. The most difficult cases to deal with are those in which a child has been seriously injured or killed because of something that could have been avoided. Dr. Brandenburg presents to us all the opportunity to reflect and improve the manner in which we care for children. Dr. Brandenburg's book is a MUST READ for not only parents, but for anyone who works closely with children including daycare staff, teachers, social workers, etc.

Summary: brandenburg= prophet
Review: Dr. Mark Brandenburg--man or medical prophet? BOTH! As this book proves, Dr. Brandenburg is quite simply the Dr. Spock for the 21st Century. With hypnotic prose and horrifying cautionary tales, Dr. Brandenburg has crafted the parents bible for the millenium. This man is truly what doctors should be- a leader, father figure, and saint in surgical garb. God bless Dr. Brandenburg. I plan to journey to Tulsa to personally ask for Dr. Brandenburg's blessing. The holy power of this modern day mystic cannot be overestimated. His scalpel is guided from above. Read this book EVERYDAY.

Summary: A Service to the American Family!
Review: Excellent Book! Excellent subject! Excellent work by Dr. Brandenburg in his research, writing and presentation of Child Safe!

Without a doubt, the writing of Child Safe is a service to the American family. I found the statistics noted in the Introduction to be gripping: "25 million children a year in the U.S. are physically injured." "Trauma is the leading cause of death in children older than one year."

Dr. Brandenburg's book closes the loop by providing parents and families with the behind the scenarios and circumstances that have led to countless unnecessary injuries to children. The information he presents based on his Emergency Room work was formerly beyond the reach of the average parent. Now, there is no excuse for parents, families, and caretakers to not be informed about injury prevention. END

Summary: Eye-Opening Book!
Review: I found Child Safe to be jam-packed with very useful information! As a father of 2 boys, the most interesting chapters to me were those on 'Sports and Recreation' and 'Playgrounds.' Specifically though, the section on Pools caught my attention, as water play can be a favorite in the summers, but is probably one of the most dangerous activities a child ever undertakes.

I was much impressed with the author's cautions and warnings, and his seeming balance with the importance of allowing children to play, run, and enjoy their youth to its utmost! Considering the subject of the book, the author's tone is extremely well-balanced, and encouraging to me as a parent. I hope to see more writings by Dr. Brandenburg on the subject of the safety of children.

Summary: A Service to the American Family!
Review: I own a Safety products store in Tulsa and I am constantly looking for information and products on safety for the whole family, with an emphasis on child safety. I have both child safety books and videos in my store. I was anxious to read the new book "Child Safe" because it is written by an emergency physician and because I am a member of the Safe Kids Coalition in Tulsa. I feel it is important that I be abreast of the latest information on child safety so that I can be a resource to my customers as well as providing quality products. I also had to make the decision as to whether I wanted to sell this book in my store. I especially like Child Safe because of the easy to follow format based on the stages of child growth. It has convenient cross references to different types of injuries related to specific age groups. The Author states important facts such as how preventable many injuries are, and proceeds to detail how these injuries can be prevented. I was pleased that the Author emphasized the importance of parental supervision. I hear so many stories about how a child was left alone for a brief period and sustained some type of injury. I agree with the Author that a child must be supervised at all times due to the ease with which children sustain injuries from unsuspecting situations. Another important issue that is discussed in the book is gun safety. This issue is getting so much attention in the media that every parent, whether they own a gun or not, must be conscious of the dangers that exist from guns and teach their children to be aware of the dangers that guns present. Another area covered in the book is child abuse. Parents must be educated and prepared to respond to situations that point to this very serious problem. Overall, I feel this book is excellent and should be in every home where a child lives or would visit. The book is just as important in a home as a fire extinguisher or smoke alarm. Essential reading for all parents who want a safe world for their children. I would be happy to speak to anyone about this book and its relevance to contemporary safety issues that are important to all parents.
