Rating: Summary: A truly useful book for the expectant mother. Review: As a midwife, a women's health nurse practitioner, and a labor room nurse for 23 years, I recommend highly this book to all expectant mothers. This unusual pregnancy book is actually a combination of two previously published and highly successful volumes. The first book, Pregnancy Myths offers an unusual wealth of insights and practical suggestions for the expectant mother. Rather than a standard treatment of the facts of pregnancy, he chose to present the medically related information in the form of answers to a total of 78 myths about pregnancy. I find this a surprisingly effective way to articulate important and relevant information on most of the questions facing the expectant mother. The second book, Birth Day! The Last 24 Hours of Pregnancy walks the expectant mother through the entire child birth process. From the onset of labor to the moment of birth, each stage of the process was discussed in detail. Relevant clinical options and potential complications were discussed in detail in terms easily understood by the average expectant woman. The facts seem to have been well researched and up-to-day. The book is well written and is a pleasure to read. This is an invaluable and practical pregnancy guide for every expectant mother.
Rating: Summary: Well written, accurate information setting out the facts! Review: As a pediatrician, I know that parents' understanding of their childrens' well being begins with an understanding of their own health. Dr. Benson has written a wonderfully consise, up to date and accurate book that clearly separates fact from fiction. In no uncertain terms, "old wives tales" are so labeled, and what are sources of concern and worry for expecting parents are explained and de-mystified by Dr. Benson. Well organized into discrete sections, "pregnancy myths" are discussed one by one in clear, understandable language. A large volume of well referenced information is presented in a very readable format. This book is an outstanding primer on pregnancy, and is a absolute "must read" for expecting couples.

Benson's book to provide a clear explanation for many of the "old wives' tales" surrounding pregnancy. His explanations are based on scientific fact without being difficult to understand. As an OB staff educator I recommend Dr. Benson's book as a resource for nurses with limited experience in answering a family's questions about pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum.

Rating: Summary: Meant to be both educational and enjoyable to read. Review: FROM THE BACK COVER: "While it may seem to average readers that everything under the sun has been written on the subject of pregnancy, my experience as an obstetrician in private practice for ten years reveals important gaps in their knowledge--it still surprises me to hear what some childbirth educators are teaching to their classes. In this book, two short volumes, Birth Day! The Last 24 Hours of Pregnancy, and Pregnancy Myths, have been combined to provide a different and important perspective on pregnancy. Birth Day! addresses the natural anxiety of every pregnant woman: What will my labor be like? Or, how will it differ from the first? Topics such as Lamaze breathing, pain medication, episiotomy, and Cesarean section are examined in detail. The time course of labor and the hospital routine are also explained so that every woman facing labor will have some idea of what to expect. Birth Day! answers all the questions expectant mothers most frequently ask--and those which they are sometimes too embarrassed, too stressed, or too intimidated to ask. Pregnancy Myths exposes many commonly-held beliefs about the birth experience as false. Do you believe: Pregnancy over the age of 35 is high risk? Fruit juice is good for you? It is okay for pregnant women to have an occasional drink of alcohol? Cramping in the first trimester is a sign of miscarriage? The fetal heart rate gives a clue about gender? Pregnant women should not sleep on their backs? Pregnancy Myths seeks to entertain while correcting these and many other widely believed misconceptions and to bring the insights of the latest scientific thought and old-fashioned common sense to expectant parents.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Benson is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in private practice with three women partners and a nurse practitioner in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
