Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A great read... Review: This book is a great read for anyone WITH children interested in traveling around the world. I *expected* to hear of a trip that included first class flights and top-notch hotels...I *appreciated* David's honesty concerning the way money was handled. I think a lot of people are turned off by the whole "rich guy taking a trip with nanny along" mainly from jealousy. We may not all be as wealthy as David, but I did not find him pretentios at all. Great idea to put it in an "emails sent home" format. Very unique. Now, if he would only put a clip of the charging hippo video on his web site!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This book was outstanding. I recommend it to all. Review: One Year Off was sheer delight from beginning to end. David Cohen wrote with a refreshing candor, not pretending the year was perfect at all times. After the fact, he even debated whether decision to take three young children abroad under such often perilous conditions had been such a good idea. I think we would all agree that it was. He was a devoted father and husband and I think his family will never forget the experiences they had, though there were times when they probably wished they'd stayed home! I know what I shall give my friends for Christmas. This book should appeal to everyone.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: perfect in every way but one Review: i immensely enjoyed this book, hoping to one day go on a round the world journey myself...the book gave me some great ideas...the one drawback, however is that i still have no idea how to afford my trip,as this author is obviously very well off...but i suppose he deserves whatever success comes to him as much as i would deserve any that comes to me!
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Insufferable writing Review: David Cohen seems incapable of looking at the world except as a pampered, racially superior American. He is the smuggest fellow I've come across in a book since many a Jane Austen character. No deep thinker and his book reflects his shallowness. He loves his wealth though.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This isn't your typical family travelogue Review: It's not only impressive that Cohen took his family around the world, but also that he picked some of the most challenging locales. Visiting Laos and Cambodia, driving through India and crossing the Australian desert is not exactly the average family vacation. This book should inspire any family -- or anyone at all -- to get off the beaten path, really explore and create an authentic travel experience.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: The Cohen's idea of One Year Off is hardly "roughing it". Review: A good read but hardly the typical family's reality. Not many off us take a vacation with nanny in-tow, nor do we return to purchase a home in Ross (one of the Bay Area's richest suburbs). I resented Cohen's self-depiction as "one-of-us" and felt his adventure inaccessible to anyone outside his socio-economic class.Having said that, it is a good read just to glimpse some of the exotic scenes outside the U.S. Would have liked more follow-up on how they met some of the challenges of traveling with their kids. I found Cohen had a tendancy to ask a question but never gave us the answer (eg he wonders how they will feed their kids on the road --who are picky eaters-- and then neglects to tell us what the kids ended up eating to remain healthy during the trip.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Tedious travelogue Review: I didnt enjoy this at all mainly because it was soself-referential. The author assumes we care about him and hisfamily. I don't. As my daughter said after reading a chapter: "borrrrring."
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Very entertaining book! Review: My husband and I both enjoyed this book and hope to someday take an extended trip with our three children. The anecdotes and mishaps were described in ways that made me laugh out loud at times. I highly recommend this book to anyone raising a family and wanting to escape the pressures of family life in the 90s. I will take the advice of other reviewers and read it out loud to our kids.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A Must Read for the Burned Out Entrepreneur Review: David Cohen, his wife, their gaggle of kids (plus nanny) leave behind the bourgoise comforts of Mill Valley, California for the world he helped popularize in coffee table books (Cohen is the brillant creator of the "Day in the Life" series). His often hilarious tale of chutzpah, courage and kvetching while traveling around the world, is a must read for everyone ready to chuck it all and head to Bali. Bill Gates, take heed.
