Rating: Summary: A Little Gem of a Book! Review: I picked up this book because I was fed up with fighting with my 8 year-old son about chores. I am so happy that I found it!
The authors outline a 4-step plan that will effectively get your child to willingly cooperate with chores. They begin with suggestions for age-appropriate chores (ages 3-5, 6-9, and 10-13). Then the steps to success are: 1) Get Organized, 2) Assigning Household Jobs, 3) Teaching Your Child How to Do a Job, and 4) Encouraging Your Child. The authors explain succinctly why each step is vital to the success of the plan, as well as to the development of your child! They stress proper role modeling and positive reinforcement as methods to effectively achieve the main goals of A) getting the chores done, and B) teaching your child important life skills. At just 55 pages, it took me only about an hour to read, and I was instituting the plan the very next day. It's extremely easy to do, and what's more--it works!
I also highly recommend the book "Homework Without Tears: A Parents Guide for Motivating Children to Do Homework and to Succeed in School" by Lee Canter, for those of you parents struggling with your kids in that arena too.
