Summary: The Portable Pediatrician For Parents
Review: I was a first time mother when my mother-in-law gave me this book. I can honestly say it has been the greatest help to myself and my husband. It is very informative, funny, and easy reading. I think it has saved my pediatricians sanity. I will look up things in the book and go from there. It has been a parental lifesaver. I now have a second child and I still look at the book for advice. This book is a must, it should be a volume set with the book "what to expect when you are expecting". This book is the best thing to give new and "experienced" parents.

Summary: Great resource for parents
Review: I will admit, I am a little biased as I am a good friend of Dr. Nathanson's daughter. Even with this in mind, I have really used and enjoyed this book. Unlike many of the other parenting books in my possession (ranging from Dr. Sears to Dr. Dobbs), I feel this book offers a balanced approach to parenting issues. She's upfront as to where she stands, and often provides info on both sides. While not as touchy-feely as Dr. Sears, she really captured some of my feelings (her infant section talks about falling in love with your baby), and still tells stories while still staying to the point(my husband disliked Sears Baby Book because of the large amounts of stories).

The book is not meant as a substitute for medical care. Rather she tries to help clarify when a situation is something worth calling the doctor about, or running to the E.R. As a first time mom I find this very useful as I am never sure if I am overreacting or not.

Each section describes the babys emotional, physical, and skills development. She also discusses common illness for that age, and what to expect at the baby well-visit. She also has a profile on special issues like divorce and "if we get pregnant now", and how it would affect that age group. There is also several sections in the back that apply to all ages: letters to give to interferring relatives about the latest baby info like not smoking around baby, breastfeeding etc, more detailed illness information, and first aid.

My only complaint are the illustrations which are weird, and the fact that its slighly out of date in relation to some of the latest AAP recomendations.

Overall, I think its a great addition to a new parents library.

Summary: great medical & behavioral advice
Review: In addition to great advice about health and first aid, it
has good explanations of what kids are going through
developmentally at different ages. These helped us to deal
with sleep issues, among other things.

I purchased a bunch of books, and even read most of several of them.
This is the one I keep going back to over and over again.

Summary: This is the 90's version of "Dr. Spock"-But Better !
Review: My first child is three years old and I can tell you I've referred to this book so many times, the pages are tattered. This book is informative and reassuring. The explaination of illnesss symptoms I've read have replaced several calls to our doctor. Parenting tips in this book are great and work! The book also spans thru the older child too so you get alot for your money.

Summary: Great Read, Great Advice
Review: My wife and I love this book -- it provides a great "by the age description" through Kindergarden, and great common sense advice on common illness and child rearing issues. AAA+++

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent, Sanity-Saver for any parent of young children
Review: So in-depth, yet easy to read. Threw away all my other parenting books. This is a parent's "raising a child" bible.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: I buy this book for every new parent!
Review: The Portable Pediatrician is the most neutral, common sense guide and reference to raising children (and I've read them all)!! It gives the basics, from how formulas are different to what to expect of your two year old. It also provides the most comprehensive and understandable outline of illnesses, what they are, why they may or may not be dangerous and HOW TO MAKE AN ASSESSMENT of the seriousness of the illness! This is a must have reference book that every parent should own!!

Summary: A Great Reference
Review: This book covers nearly every medical or health question you might have concerning young children. It has saved me many phone calls to the pediatrician's office

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The very best book for new and experienced parents.
Review: This book goes from birth to 5 years. The most important early years. Almost every possible situation is discussed and answered with what to do and how to do it. I have given this book to everyone I know.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The most complete, thorough pediatric guidebook for ages 1-5
Review: This book has been our bible to child care. It helps you to raise empathetic, bright, wonderful children, while also telling you everything you need to know about colic, mumps, head lice and ear infections. I highly recommend this book for fathers, as I know it has made my husband a more patient, empathetic and enthusiastic parent. It covers every single thing you need to know from head to toe, heart to soul. It covers every stage of infancy to kindergarten, letting you know what to expect, physically and intellectually at each stage. When you are initially sent home with your infant, there are so many changes in the first weeks, it's nice to have a guidebook to know what is normal, what should be cause for concern, and how to navigate through all of it.

I found the book to be very well-written, and humorous whenever possible. Anyone with young children can appreciate the need to keep a sense of humour about the trials you will endure as a parent. I can't say enough about this book. I have bought it for every expectant parent I've known. I would love to thank the author for all the help her book has been to us.
