Rating: Summary: Simple? Yes, but profound doesn't mean complex! Review: Having read many of these reviews, I can bundle them into two groups? Those who read it to appreciate its potential value (both Mormon and non-Mormon) and those who have something against the Mormon church and are using this venue to vent their dislike. If you give it a bad review, you should be bold enough to sign your name. You know, to "stand for something". But the fact is, if you read this book and find something you can actually apply to your life to benefit you and/or your family, then Hinckley has done his job. He has set out to give us a few basic, simple methods for improving the society we live in. Honestly, I didn't consider it a page-turner, but I found numerous ideas that I can readily apply to my work, social, and family life. It is profound, and simple enough for the common person, like me, to apply. It will forever reside on my book shelf with other great works for easy reference ... and I intend to refer to it often.
Rating: Summary: Standing for Something Review: An extraordinary book of truth and life. A much needed book for today's world. Strongly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book! Review: I picked up my copy of Standing for Something while attending a conference, and couldn't resist reading the preface and first chapter - so much so that I bowed out of the session and concentrated on the book's message while seated in the lobby. For the next week or two I enjoyed each chapter in my early morning study as a way of providing inspiration for the day, and I would often contemplate how President Hinckley's wisdom fit my own thoughts, words, and actions.Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints revere Gordon Bitner Hinckley as a prophet, meaning one authorized to receive, expound, and interpret God's word for people throughout the world in our era. What excites me about this book is that President Hinckley has written a prophetic message that is generally accessible to all people, by releasing his work through a major publisher, writing in an engaging, personal style, and conveying his message in an inclusive manner, using familiar Bible passages, his own experiences, examples from the media, and portrayals of exemplary lives in fleshing out each quality or virtue. When I finished reading Standing for Something I felt that I could easily share this book with my friends of other faiths for their edification because it bridges and amplifies our shared understandings and can open up dialogue about faith and morality - topics that are often neglected or addressed in guarded contemporary conversations. I can't help but believe that the ideals of this book, if embraced by individuals and families, would lead us out of the spiritual morass that engulfs our society. The author, a man with extensive leadership experience who has traversed almost every climate and nation in doing good and one with a special ability to stand for truth and morality himself, is a special individual to whom all should give their attention. Our family has begun to study the book, a chapter per week, in our family nights in hopes that it will continue to enrich our lives.
Rating: Summary: Standing for Something... something to stand for! Review: This book, written by the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, addresses many of the social and other problems society faces today. It is a book inspired of years of experience dealing with literally millions of people, including his own family. A definite must see for anyone interested in a better, more fulfilling life, with the context of marriage, work, family and most other areas.
Rating: Summary: Even my Teenagers liked it! Review: I read this book mostly out of curiosity peppered with a desire to focus on traits which will bring peace to my life. While reading the book, I would leave it laying around the house -- often finding it somewhere other than where I had left it. I found out that the four teenagers in my house would occasionally read segments of the book. How did I discover this? When my 17 yr old son said, "You know, being thrifty makes sense -- just like that "old guy" Hinckley said." I know I felt motivated to refocus on strengthing my positive attributes as a result of reading this book -- but the best review I can give is: my teenagers liked it and have quoted from it. That alone makes it worthwhile to have in my home!
Rating: Summary: Give us a break Review: Hinckley is the head of a multination MLM that disguises itself as a religion to avoid taxes. He's openly lied to the media and to his followers. How insulting that he would write a book on virtue.
Rating: Summary: Standing For Something: 10 Neglected Virtues that Will Heal Review: Very simply, this book speaks directly to the heart of any person who loves virtue and Family values. Expressed simply and without equivocation. Backed with scriptoral references from the the Old and New Testaments, but duelly supported with wonderful anecdotes and wisdoms gained from the author's life experiences. An optimistic plea for us to return to the forgotten basic Morals upon which this great country was founded. A must read for anyone who is not blind to the ails of our current society.
Rating: Summary: Great book, great message Review: I can honestly say that I am amazed at how simple principles and ideas make so much sense amid the confusing, hectic world we live in. Hinckley's book just goes to show that sometimes we all need to take a step back and re-evaluate our lives and what is really important. Although these ideas are easily labeled as "old-fashioned" and "dated", the book proves that some things never change. Everyone can benefit from the timeless words found in this book.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This is a great book. This book will touch your hearts and minds of you will let it. It is a must read for all. It is for all people, religous or not relgious. One of the best books I have ever read. In a world where virtue has been forgotten, it will increase your hope for a better change.
Rating: Summary: Standing for Something Review: This is an excellent book which, I feel, will appeal to many serious and responsible Americans. The Editorial Review expressed here, in my opinion, is excellent. I endorse it.
