Rating: Summary: What else can be said? Review: What else can be said in addition to what others have posted? Honestly, nothing. This book is basic. There is no hidden secret to happiness and peaceful co-existence. The values taught in this book are the same basic values that are taught by Buddha, Mohammed and Jesus Christ, yet Mr. Hinckley expands upon them and applies them to today's world. If you want deep, spiritual, hidden messages, buy some C.S. Lewis, but if you want those same messages in basic English, pick up some Gordon B. Hinckley.
Rating: Summary: An Inspiring Book Review: I felt positive and enlightened after reading this book. I recommend it for people of all religions because values, morality and decency are not just Christian beliefs. This book can make YOU be a better person, regardless of your specific religious beliefs.
Rating: Summary: What the World Needs Now Review: In the wake of last week's terrorist atrocities, I feel this book is needed now more than ever in the world. If only everyone would embrace these neglected virtues - one could only imagine what a beautiful place the world would be.
Rating: Summary: "One of the best books I've read--I'm not kidding!" Review: This book was filled with guidance and advise for all who wish to live a fulfilled life. I was very impressed, and surprised by his writing style. This book offered such simple solutions to our complicated, modern, and fast-paced lifestyles, that it was inspiring to read. The author, although totally and openly a great religious leader, represented his views from a totally spiritual realm. If we all, as a world brotherhood lived, according to these virtues, we would have a utopian society. I may have somewhat a biased view of this book, as I truly love and respect this man of God. This was a very good book.
Rating: Summary: HOW WE ALL NEED TO LIVE OUR LIVES Review: This book shows what this world needs, and unfortunatly lacking in, morals and virtues, that if followed, would lead to a peaceful and highly productive world. Many people are already bias againist this book just because the fact that Gordon B. Hinckley is the leader of the L.D.S church, this book is a great guide for all people. Catholic, protestant, evangelist, whatever you may be this is a wonderful book, that will make you want to try harder to show and apply all the virtues which he talks about in the book in daily life. This should be a book that is read as a family, it will bring love and respect for one another and strenghten your family's bond. Gordon B. Hinckley gives us hope in a world that seems to be getting worse in morality, no one can deny that fact. I encourage those of you that do not think highly of L.D.S to put away your bias and your pride and try this book. I'm sure that it will change the way you think about life and if you are not a member of The Church Of Latter Day Saints it will change your outlook on the basis of their beliefs also, hopefully people will soon stop looking at mormons as a "cult." Books like "Standing For Something" is a perfect step forward for people to look at mormons with respect and not intolerance. I hope that you will try this book and come to find it is one of the best you have read, i know it has happened to me, I try now daily to apply the virtues which he talks about and i find that i am a better person for it and i feel better about myself at the end of the day also. THIS BOOK IS FOR EVERYONE AND EVERY FAITH!!!
Rating: Summary: Hinckley stands for something alright ... Review: ... what total crap! Totally sappy, feel-good rhetoric spouted by the leader of the "we're not different, we're just like you" Mormons. Hinckley is so busy building up his multi-billion dollar corporation unto himself that he'll stop at nothing to "pull one over on the masses." Whatever values Hinckley espouses in his book, he's just regurgitating that which has been preached before ... no new prophecies here. Don't line his pockets with your hard-earned money to read what you already know.
Rating: Summary: Raised by the Rod --the Fishing Rod Review: This book is truly a great call to virtue. The author is striving to bring to mind those good things in each of our lives --the tried and true values of patience, overcoming tragic difficulties, and finding the good in life. Recommended reading for anyone trying to find the high ground in life.
Rating: Summary: Standing for Something a Good Sit-Down Read Review: In an effort to bring Americans back to the basics of goodness and purity, Standing for Something: 10 Neglected Virtues That Will Heal Our Hearts and Homes, by Gordon B. Hinckley, addresses the problems of the secularization of America. Hinckley, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, blends his years of religious study and experience into one book, which offers ten important keys to solving many social problems in America today. Love, honesty, morality, mercy, thrift, gratitude and faith are a few of the virtues Hinckley feels America has lost touch with. Refocusing our lives on them, he says, will help stop the moral decay that surrounds us. In his book, Hinckley recounts the inspiration our founding fathers received when they drafted the Constitution and the faith that the country possessed at its very beginning. He sites the rejection of these values as the source of America's toughest problems, namely the deterioration of the family and a national loss of faith. Hinckley draws on his own life experiences, world travels and our nation as it is today to illustrate his virtues. And, though he centers his points on his own faith, Standing for Something is a book from which all Christian denominations and religious sects can profit. 60 Minutes reporter Mike Wallace, in his forward to the book, says that Hinckley persuades the reader to "ruminate...on old-fashioned values: by name, Virtue and Integrity." Hinckley's virues come from the basic rules of human decency and civility, no matter a person's race or creed. Standing for Something not only serves as a guide for individual living, but it also reminds us of the code on which America was founded: Faith, God, family and country.
Rating: Summary: a teenager's point of view! Review: I was first referred to this book by a friend at BYU, I was facing some hard times in my life and needed something to help me out. President Hinckley's point of view was just what I needed. While seemingly simplistic the ten virtues he outlined are things that we over look on a daily basis. His simple explaination of each of these virtues was not only enlightening but inspirational. Regardless of your views of the church, everyone can get something out of reading this book. A few pages every morning not only helped me get through my freshmen year at college but also changed my daily, and eventually my eternal perspective. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, it has truly been an asset to my life.
Rating: Summary: So Simple, Yet So Complicated Review: To take a line from President Gordon B. Hinckley: "...make good men better and bad men good..." That is exactly what this book is about: helping people understand how to become better then they were yesterday. So many things in life seem so simple, yet we are so slow to learn. I shudder to think what would come of this world if those who have read this book actually applied the 10 principles more fully in their lives; IT WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER! Complacency is far too common. Study these virtues and strive to live them! No one will do it perfectly, but will become all the better through the effort. Why derive new theories for all the world ills when society as a whole is so far from understanding and living principles and ideals which have been in existanced for ages and taught by many different individuals, religiously affiliated and otherwise.
