Summary: "A Child Called It" is an inspirational novel about abuse.
Review: "A Child Called It," by Dave Pelzer is the unforgetable account of one of the most brutal child abuse cases the world has ever seen. The novel is based on the abusive childhood Pelzer under went. As a child, Pelzer's alcoholic mother played torturous games with his life, which nearly left him dead. Pelzer was not considered a son, but a slave; and he was no longer a boy, but an it. Luxeries for him were food and a moment without constant abuse that governs his daily life. It is clear in today's world that abuse of all kinds are unacceptable and untolerable. Pelzer, between the ages of four and twelve exhibited greater strength, courage, and a will to survive unlike no other. "A Child Called It" serves as a eye opener to those who are blind to abuse due to alcoholism. Therefore, today's society may ask the question, "what satisfaction is felt when abusing a helpless child." "A Child Called It" recounts a narrative form the tramatic experiences Pelzer was forced to overcome. The rare experiences that Pelzer battled with provide the basis for the novel. experiences forms his data for the novel. He gives the reader a first hand look into child abuse. Most readers of the novel struggle to understand "why" and many can not accept the torture Pelzer experienced. His thorough recoglection of the vivid details of his childhood struggles prove to be both provoctave and memorable. The author forces the reader to ask why. Why was he the only child abused and why was a child tortured? These questions are asked by the reader, but never quite answered within the novel. The novel is the first part of a trilogy. This novel depicts language that was developed from a child's point of view. The tone and vocabulary reflects the age and wisdom of a child between the ages of four and twelve. Dave Pelzer uses simple sentences in his writings to grab the attention of readers of all ages. Sentences such as, "Mother's running around yelling at my brothers," and "Smack! Mother hits me in the face, and I topple to the floor," are just a few examples of simple sentences. The novel was obviously based on abuse, therfore, the tone was confusion and meloncoly. To grab the attention of the reader, Pelzer first describes his salvation and then proceeds to describe his childhood "hell." Pelzer uses no unique technique to grab his readers, he simply tells his life story. This technique is what makes his novel a bestseller. "A Child Called It" was a unforgettable novel that made my heart break and my insides turn. From the moment I opened the book up it became impossible to put down. As I read, I felt an immense amount of anger, sadness, and confusion. How can a mother do this to a child? I continuously asked myself this question. There were moments while reading the novel that I had to fight back the tears. Dave Pelzer created an incredible piece of work. Simple but fantastic. Although the novel was one of a kind, I must critize but one thing. Pelzer failed to inform the reader why his mother only tortured him and not the other three children. Leaving important information out like this only left the reader confused and sort of angry. Minus that detail, I give Dave Pelzer's, "A Child Called It" four stars.

Summary: Could not put it down. Read the book in one day!
Review: Amazing! I began the book around 8:00 a.m. and finished it by 2:00 p.m. It captured me. So full of emotion. While reading it the tears began to stream. By the time I finished, I was sobbing. It is amazing how a child who received so much abuse and degradation could have the courage and the will to stay alive. Being the mother of two little boys, I could not fathom what drove his mother to be that way to a child, her child. She was hell on earth! Dave Pelzer is truly an inspiration. He shows us all that you can overcome the most horrendous of obstacles in life. I definitely will be purchasing "The Lost Boy" and "A Man Named Dave."

Summary: The Best Book of the Year
Review: A Child Called "It": One child's Courage to Survive. Author: Dave Pelzer.

As a mother of three children, as a person and, as a professional, I was so incredibly astonished and touched by this story. I got the book about 4 months ago, and I started reading it about 11 p.m. last night. To tell you the truth, I did not stop until I finished it.

It is a true story of a woman from a medium class American family, that after being an excellent mother (even more than the average) for several years, starts to have problems drinking alcohol (and others). All at the sudden, she "chooses" one of her boys Dave to become the scapegoat and victim of her problems. She abuses Dave in such particular and dangerous ways, she degrades him, and she humiliates him and does such dreadful things to him that she sounds to me as completely schizofreniac.

On the other side, every one in the family, including his father, let her get away with her torturing, and other people either decided to become blind or deaf, or did not know what to do. What makes your heart break is that the story is seen and told by the child's point of view, it's so, so sad.

My opinion is that this book should be in every household and in every school there is in this world. If you are a Parent read it, if you are teacher read it, if you are a brother, sister, relative, etc. ¡You should read it!.

To put it more clearly, I truly believe that all boys and girls after certain age (even six, eight or nine) should read it. It should be a "must for the reading programs of every school in the whole world", so children, teachers, parents and all professionals that deal with children can know what to do or well to ask for help. Specially children. Whose love is some times so great or their blame so high, that could feel totally lost.

For me: The best book of the year.

Summary: awakening.
Review: As adults, we are not really trained to really listen and observe abused children (or not abused children for that matter); we don't notice. David was shouting and no one noticed. He's lucky that he's still alive. What this book does is make you more aware of children, signs to look for in abused children and the incredible "protective" feelings of the abused towards the abuser after all the harm. Poignant. Listen, observe, understand.

What happened to the other kids, the mother, and the coward of a father? He's worse than the mother.

Summary: Every parent to be should read this book!
Review: I have only begun to read novels this past year now that my children are older and I have a little more time to myself. I saw this book and decided that I would like to read a true story. I am very disturbed my child abuse and can't beleive this story. I read the book the same night that I brought it home, I could not put it down. I found myself crying and thanking God that I never have been exposed to this. I have three great children and I can't imagine ever hurting them physiclly or emotionally. I truelly feel that in todays world the youth of today should read this book so they appreciate a child (a gift from God) so this abuse could end. Thank you David Pelzer for your courage in writing this book.

Summary: A horror story of an evil mother and a child's spirit/hope
Review: I agree with all the previous reviewers. I would like to add that this shows how important a child's first three years are in a childs ability to survive in this wicked world. Also, faith in God even in David's lowest moments help him to survive. Thank you, David -God go with you!

Summary: A powerful story that impacted my entire outlook on children
Review: A gripping novel that should be recommended to every parent. I have never felt such horrifying pain from a book. My understanding of the feelings of children now have totally changed my outlook about these little creatures. I never used to be fond of children, but I have really grown to love them and realize what precious jewels they are. I'm glad that David decided to share his story with the world, so I can learn a valuable lesson before I start to bring these wonderful people in my life.
