Rating: Summary: A Child Called it Review: The book a child called it would have to be one of the best books that I have read in a long time. The way that this whole book is put togather is remarkable. This child went through so much and thank the lord above he is still alive today for his own safety and to write about his experience as a child to let others know of the child abuse that is happining in this world today. This book really touched me, it made me have so much anger and hate towards his mother and father. How could his father sit there and let all this mental and physial abuse just happen to his own child, his own flesh and blood. It's so ridiculous. Just reading this book made me think about all the children out there who are just like David, getting abused, it made me want to get up and try to do something about it. It made me so full of anger and sadness for David. All togather I belive this book is extrodanary and I would recomend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: spellbinding Review: This book broke my heart. To believe that a mother would do to her child what David's mother did to him is unbelievable. To find the courage to tell the world about his experiences is outstanding. David has written a book that expresses the horror of child abuse without doing so in a "pity me" manner. I found the book fascinating and sad. I highly recommend this book. It is said to be one of a trilogy. I am looking forward to reading the other two books. For those who do read it, you might find it interesting to note that he states in an interview that he went back as an adult and spoke with his mother before she died and forgave her. He said he asked her if she would really have killed him and he says that she told him the only reason she didn't was that she couldn't decide what to do with the body.
Rating: Summary: A Very Brave and Corageous Little Boy Review: If your interested in reading a book that leaves you with a sense of sadness and happiness all in one this is the book for you! The author David Pelzer was the man that lived the life of this brave and corageous little boy. The things that he endured when he was young, left you paralyzed and distraught. Cold chills will overwhelm your body, with a filling of grief and sadness so depressing that you don't want to continue to read because you are so scared of what he might endure next, but you know if you don't read you will never know how he ends up. This book is about the life of David Pelzer who was beaten by his mother, deprived of food, and tortured as a young child. He no longer was called by his name, he was known as "IT". He never really knew what love was except for before his mother went crazy. David's dad tried to help him, but ended up only making things worse. Some of the things she did to him would make you cringe. She burned his arm on the stove and made him throw up whatever he ate at school. His mother truley was the Devil. The intended audience would be for young adults and older. This book is definitly not for children! The farther you get into the book the more descriptive it gets. His life gets worse before it gets better! David wrote his book, based on his life, simple. Not to make you feel sorry for him or to pity him, but to tell you that all things in life are not easy, but we can all get through them eventually and still lead a healthy life. Free from the past, and ready for the future. I really liked this book. It was very sad to think of how his own mother could have beat him and disown him like she did. It is not that unheard of though all over the world there are children like David trying to survive the unexpectable. They only hope they are lucky enough to survive the raft of domestic violence. The main reason I chose this book is because it deals with everyday life situations and because it speaks the truth through a young boys life, someone who didn't give up and give in to the tragic consequences of being born and not wanted.
Rating: Summary: Incredible Courage amidst incredible abuse Review: As I read this, parts of the text were unbearable. Yet, Dave's story is an unfortunate reality of the deviance that exists within the human psyche to control, manipulate and abuse another. Anyone involved with educating children in whatever form they chose should read this because the truth brings to light what is hidden in the darkness. Dave is definitely an overcomer and his book will challenge you to look at the little boys and girls we see each day...a bit more carefully and mercifully.
Rating: Summary: The truth, about ' A Child Called it Review: 'A Child called it' is a sad but gripping novel. Whilst covering the terrible torments that Dave is put through, by child abuse and physical and mental torture; this book also tells you about some of the horrible things Dave has to do to try and survive. 'A child called it' is a true story, and until he was 12 he had to cope with this. The genre of this book is an autobiography, as it is Dave Pelzer's own childhood. It explores the various punishments that Dave was given, for example acting as his mothers slave, being put into near starvation, and finally being kept in a room of Clorex (poison) for hours on end. As I mentioned before, the two main characters are Dave and his mother. Dave is a scared, beaten, and timid boy, who is given the blame for everything. Whereas his mother if totally different. She is alcoholic, emotionally unstable, cruel, harsh and is very unpredictable. She is someone who loves to play dangerous games on her own son. Dave has a father who at the start is one of his hero's and four brothers, who watch with glee, as he is tortured. Dave's brothers are Ronald, Stan, Russell and Kevin. The style of this book is sad, descriptive, and an inspiring fight for freedom. Dave survey's his emotions and feelings towards his life in a very honest way. He also includes extremely detailed accounts of what happened to him, and what he thinks are the reasons towards his own mother's actions. 'A child called it' also uses a circular narrative to put across the story. First it tells you how Dave is rescued, and then tells you why. Overall I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it older readers. I would describe it as sad, extraordinary, dramatic, detailed book, which covers many topics (including child abuse.) I think that the circular narrative works as it creates tension and suspense. I would of preferred it if it hadn't been used, as I think that I would of found this book more upsetting. As I wouldn't of known whether he was going to survive or not, and whether he was going to be rescued. This would of still created suspence, but I don't think that it ruined it too much.
Rating: Summary: A Child Called "It" Review: The novel A Child Called "It" is very interesting. I liked the book because I love to read non-fiction stories. I belive that David Pelzer, the main character was not treated with respect. Just because David is a young boy does not mean that he could be treated poorly, or unfairly. I wish I was around to help poor David. I fell I really could of helped him out. What I enjoyed in this book was the story, and interesting facts given. Do you like books like this one? If so you really should read it. Although, Pelzer likes to talk about things that will loose your attenion. To follow along you really must read carfully, and pay close attenion through put the entie story.

Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I read this book because a friend of mine had recommended it to me. You know that Dave survived his ordeal because he starts off with his rescue before he goes back into his childhood. As I was reading the book, there were times when I would cry almost uncontrollable, how could a mother do that to her child. After reading this book, I had the opportunity to meet Dave Pelzer and hear him speak. He is a wonderful person to be around and he almost always has a smile on his face.
Rating: Summary: Left you wanting more Review: This book is one that you won't put down. I enjoyed his honesty and the insight of a horrible child abuse case. The one main problem that i had was that the three books in the series should have been combined into one book. The reader shouldn't have to buy three seperate books when the story could have easily been put into one. If you are just wanting to buy one book, don't buy this because you will want to buy the next two and spend even more money. A Child Called "It" is very short and readable, I suggest you read it at a bookstore or at a library, it own't take you long at all.
Rating: Summary: Shocking!! Review: If you are about to go into a courtroom or other political arena, for the purpose of defending a child, READ THIS BOOK right before you go in, and the outrage you will feel from it will help you have the right passion about it. What a shocking story! I was quite shaken. I had to put it down, feeling sick. It is amazing how this man survived, and more amazing how he evolved positively. It made me look at my neighborhood in a different way. How many children around me are going through this same? It made me pray for all the children in my community. I remember ignoring an incident in a store where the mother was out of control, pulled her child out of the store, wacking the child's nose on the way, which instintly bleed, and may have been broken. Now I am haunted by the abuse I may have been preventing if I had reported it...I don't know. You just never know. The people around David ignored the signs, or just couldn't fathom this kind of torture. People, there IS evil in this world. Don't believe it? Read this book; you'll believe. Buy this book and give it to the people/judges/politicians you know who are soft on child abuse--maybe they will change. One thing that lacked, was I really wanted to know what happened to the mother after David was rescued. (But now I know he wrote more books, which may fill in the aftermath details.) This is purely a testimonial, with a small aftermath, so don't get this to look for solutions.
