She is no hard nosed crusader, but rather writes with sympathy and humanity about the daily trials that parents face as they try to control what their children are exposed to. Helps to figure out what matters and what is trivial. Dr. Levine addressses the fact that children at different ages are likely to be disturbed by different kinds of material, and makes suggestions about both good and bad kinds of media for kids at different ages. An important, readable book. A fast course in both child development and media.

Review: What an extraordinary book. Dr. Levine manages to summarize decades of research on how media violence affects kids in a concise, educational and very human way. She reminds us that all kids are not the same and all violence is not the same and then provides a useful guide for parents in their attempts to make sure that their children are not frightened, desensitzed or made more aggressive by what they see. After tragedies like Littleton, it really helps to know the difference between what is merely distasteful to adults and what is truly damaging to kids and teens
