Rating: Summary: REALLY PRETTY, A GREAT GIFT Review: A really pretty baby name book. I'm talking here about the yellow book with the Mary Engelbreit cover; I see this book has a number of versions. But the one I bought was just gorgeous. It's full of great names and has lots of lovely boxes packed with intriguing trivia. Apparently, when this book was first published in the 70s, it was the only baby name book to contain unusual names in addition to Mary and John. My mother still has one of the original copies (she named me with it!),but in my opinion this latest edition is even better. A timeless classic.
Rating: Summary: Wish I'd Found This One First!!! Review: As a college teacher, I found this book extremely intelligent, well-researched and beautifully written. But most of all, it was a sheer pleasure to read. I bought three other name books, but this one was definitely the most fun. Don't let the "new age" title confuse you. The author defines the new age as a much-hoped-for time when prejudice and fear will at last melt away and we'll all live together in peace and harmony. A beautiful thought, a beautiful book. Highly recommended!!!
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: It has mainly traditional names in it. (more so than any other book i had looked at). Plus it has great little tidbits mixed in!
Rating: Summary: Banal stuff Review: Just a rehash of other dictionaries and personal opinions. So what
Rating: Summary: WHAT FUN!!! Review: Lots of great names from all over the world. This book has a real "internet" feel about it. It has all the timeless classics like Sarah, Emily, Joshua and Austin. Plus tons of appealing new names I hadn't thought of. I found the no-angst chapter on the psychology of naming my baby especially reassuring, and the section on the best ways to create a name was a blast!!
Rating: Summary: Available May 1998: Review: The New Age Baby Name Book, 3rd Edition: Completely Revised. This new edition will have 10,000 new names for a total of 20,000.
Rating: Summary: Banal stuff Review: The third edition of this book has not benefited fron the mistakes of the past two editions. For instance: the chapter on "stereotypes" is curious as it is based a British article in the 1963 ( a bit dated!) that does not even exist!!
Rating: Summary: Dissapointing and not properly researched. Review: The third edition of this book has not benefited fron the mistakes of the past two editions. For instance: the chapter on "stereotypes" is curious as it is based a British article in the 1963 ( a bit dated!) that does not even exist!!
Rating: Summary: Good-but lacked that special "stand out" unique names. Review: This book offered many names I never knew existed. In that sense it was good. However, it did not offer anything that I felt was unique and beautiful together. Sure, there are some foreign names I never knew. But they don't stand out as names to necessarily give my children.
