Summary: Get a grip this is NOT autism, it is a motor speech disorder
Review: This book is not about autism. The reviewer on October 30, 2002 was way off base. My daughter has apraxia of speech which is a motor speech disorder. APD is a motor speech disorder. This is the ONLY book I found in our local bookseller not about autism or add. I am glad someone out there has written a book about APD.

It is an honest frank book written from the heart. If the author sounds heartwrenched it is because she is. How would you feel if you were told your child may never speak normally but is NOT deaf?

I found it a refreshing change from the books that gloom and doom or spout scientific evidence. This is from a mothers point of view and IT IS NOT ABOUT AUTISM!!

Summary: VERY TOUCHING STORY
Review: WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH SEVERAL EVALUATIONS WITH OUR NOW FIVE YEAR OLD SON. THESE DOCTORS PROBABLY COULD FILL WALLS WITH THIER DIPLOMAS, YET NO ONE COULD TELL US WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEIR ANSWER - OVERALL DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY CAUSING SPEECH DELAY. WE SOMEHOW KNEW BETTER. I READ THIS BOOK AND CRIED KNOWING THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WERE GOING THROUGH. THE BOOK IS VERY TOUCHING TO READ ANOTHER MOTHER'S ACCOUNT OF STRUGGLING TO HELP HER SON. WE FINALLY SAW A SPEECH THERAPIST WHO SPECIALIZES IN CPD - SHE RECOGNIZED THE SYMPTOMS RIGHT AWAY.

Summary: Like Sound Trhough Water -- A Review
Review: While not a parent of a child with APD, I found reading LIKE SOUND THROUGH WATER like reading a novel, complete with suspense and sympathy for very real characters. Having a daughter who is a speech pathologist, I also gained an enormous amount of knowledge about the world of parents and their children and the barriers they may encounter when they enter the "system."

As a reader, I was right there when Ben was spat upon by the boy at the private school, I was there with Karen when she felt the intense emotions of feeling so different from other parents, and I rejoiced at the end when I realized Ben had learned the necessary skills to begin his journey through life.
