Summary: Good information but confusing layout
Review: Although I found the information and recipes in this book very good, I found the type and layout confusing and difficult to read. "Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy" by Elizabeth Somer seems to have the same nutrition information in a very easy to read format. Unfortunately, Somer's book doesn't have much in the way of interesting recipes.

Summary: 5 Stars for Non-Vegetarians, 3 Stars for Vegetarians
Review: An excellent, well-organized book in general. If you are a non-vegetarian this could be the ultimate pregnancy nutrition book. If, however, you question the nutritional value of dairy & eggs (as I do) you are bound to be disappointed. Milk which provides a net LOSS of calcium (due to the calcium-leaching nature of animal-based protiens) is not a good recommendation for increasing ones calcium intake. Despite this flaw, I still find the book adaptable and appreciate the section devoted to vegetarian diets.

Summary: Incredibly Useful
Review: Even though I barely ate a thing the first five months of my pregnancy, I didn't worry about nutrition since this book helped guide me to good food choices that I could also stomach. As I began to feel better, I was able to get more creative with my menus and loved trying the nutritionally sound recipes. I particularly liked the suggested menus with titles like, "I don't feel like cooking" or "I feel awful." Very recommended.

Summary: Boring recipes, too much description.
Review: I love this book! Although I bought it to use while I was pregnant, I have used it extensively for my family and also now for my active toddler. There are so many wonderful ideas in addition to the healthy and delicious recipes - every household can use this book!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the author at a baby fair, and she is as intelligent and committed in person as she is in the text. I truly think this is a must-have book, and suitable for all levels of skill in the kitchen. You CANNOT go wrong with this one!

Review: If you actually cook, you might find the recipes in here uninspired. There is a substantial amount of information about nutrition, but personally I find it difficult to translate all that information into decisions about what to have for dinner. The Pregnancy Cookbook, with a condensed chapter on nutrition during pregnancy and lots of delicious recipes, served me much better.

Summary: Excellent, practical guide to eating while pregnant
Review: The best thing about this book is that the guidelines are reasonable. Swinney outlines what your nutrition needs are and how to meet them each trimester, but does not "lay down the law" and make you feel horribly guilty if you can't eat or just don't feel like eating perfectly all the time. A wonderful book.
