Summary: What a Great Book!
Review: THis is a fantastic book! It gave me the confidence and the techniques to start 'coaching' my children in math at home.

He does a superb job of explaining WHY you need to work with your children at home in this important subject, and also explains HOW to work with them, beginning in kindergarten, if you like. He proposes working for approximately one hour per day with your child, and claims that with his methods your child can advance up to one year in math in as little as three months!

The best thing about this book was that he was able to put into words many of the ideas and suspicions that I had had about how and why my children's public school math instruction just wasn't making the grade. He explains what is wrong with math instruction today, the incorrect assumptions that most current math teaching is based on, and explains what you as a parent can do about it. (For example, he suggests that too much time is spent on putting children into groups to 'discover' math principals, when what they really need is more coaching in explicit methods of solving problems, as well as more practice!)

This has changed how I will approach my children's education in a fundamental way, and I am extremely grateful to the author for writing this book. (By the way, I have 3 children in elementary school and found something relevant to each of them in this book.)

Summary: Outstanding.
Review: This is a wonderful book. It is well-organized, systematic, and informed by Professor Wickelgren's work in cognitive psychology and by his many years coaching talented math students of all ages. "Math Coach" inspired me to start an after-school math enrichment program at my children's school. I recommend it highly.
