Rating: Summary: Stories of Hope and Courage from Sheila Ellison Review: "The Courage to be a Single Mother" is a landmark book offering women real life stories and practical information about the many facets of the divorce process. Sheila Ellison has drawn upon her own story of courage and determination after leaving an unfulfilling and difficult marriage, and it is through her story that others can share the deep and profound journey that women take when making such a life changing choice. The stories include women from all backgrounds and diversity which brings a global message that making the choice to be free of abuse and neglect is the right of all women. I highly recommend The Courage to be a Single Mother and hope that you will not only read it, but pass it on as a gift to others who can benefit so much from reading it.

Rating: Summary: Taking Back My Life After Divorce With 2 Fantastic Books Review: I always took pride in giving my husband and kids the kind of happy family life that I never had growing up. So when my husband suddenly abandoned us for another woman I didn't know what to do first or where to turn for help. I was a stay-at-home mom so we had immediate money problems on top of the emotional ones. My sister put me in touch with a counselor who suggested 2 very helpful books. One was called, "SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS: 10 WAYS YOU CAN STOP FEELING OVERWHELMED BY MONEY AND START MAKING IT WORK FOR YOU" by Nancy Lloyd (a Family Circle columnist and money expert). She includes a lot of financial advice for divorced parents and showed me what I needed to do IMMEDIATELY after the divorce. If I hadn't read this valuable information as soon as I did I would have had to sell the house and move my family into a small apartment in a less-than-desirable school district. Next, I started reading "THE COURAGE TO BE A SINGLE MOTHER" and it has been a roadmap for the emotional matters facing our family during a time when it's hard to get up in the morning let alone make good decisions. It's not an overstatement to say that these two books saved my family's dignity and have made it easier for us to get back to a normal life. These books will help you remember your spirit and bring your family closer together.
Rating: Summary: Courage to be a Single Mother Review: I have just finished Ms. Ellison's book and I am left with the feeling that I am pretty lucky. I have had similar feelings of despair like many of the women in the book. For example, do I pack all the kids up at 2:00am to go to the drug store for medicine for one sick child or do I ride it out until morning cursing my ex while I sit up all night hoping my child makes it through the night. I have to say that I have had no problems at all with money or property issues at all, most likely because neither I nor my ex have enough of either one to be fighting over. I enjoyed reading the book because it made me feel that no matter how down I get, there is always someone else out there with a worse situation. Thanks for sharing your story.
Rating: Summary: My Bible for single motherhood Review: I heard about Sheila's book as she was featured on Oprah. Oprah advertised the show as a "must see" for anyone going through a divorce. My mother taped the show and bugged me until I watched it. After watching, I went out and bought the book, but I couldn't afford it, so I was going to read it and then return it. As I read the book I got out my highlighter and began highlighting sections, then when that wasn't good enough, got out my post-it notes to mark pages. I have since bought 14 copies of the book to give to friends going through a divorce.Sheila's book became my "Bible" as I went through the "journey" of my separation/divorce and single parenthood. She has been in the trenches with us, knows what it is like to stay up all night worrying about money and how it feels when your ex is too busy with his life to have time for the beautiful children you have brought into this world. I have never had a book that I felt was a friend. When I was down or had a question, I could find support and guidance in this book. The sections are clearly marked and the words are written by someone who really cares. This is a must have book for anyone going through single motherhood.

Rating: Summary: A wonderful, dedicated Mother who triumphed over divorce Review: I just finished reading Sheila Ellison's latest book "The Courage to be a Single Mother". Her documentation of the experience of her divorce, showing the desperation of having to cope with a totally new life, caring for her children without the support of a loving spouse is overwhelming. Her story touches your heart. How she created a new life for her children, giving them a new home, how she raced against time to get her youngest son, diagnosed with autism at the age of four, the crucial treatment and tutoring he needed to save him from the most debilitating aspects of this mental condition. She also documents the stories of dozens of other divorced mothers and shows just how much pain and difficulty they all share and how they all, in their own way, deal with their new life. It takes tremendous courage for a single mother to be there for her children and take care of them, while all the while agonizing over a broken family and shouldering all the responsibilities alone. Sheila relates how support groups of single mothers gave her strength and how she found help in her own community. It is a revelation to read this book. I truly admire this wonderful, dedicated mother and the honesty with which she describes every aspect of her divorce. She not only survived, but she triumphed over all odds to make her family strong and whole again. This book should be an inspiration to other women going through divorce, giving them hope and showing them practical ways to find support and encoragement.
