Rating: Summary: great easy to read book Review: this book will help your family more than any other parenting book on the market
Rating: Summary: Helpful for ALL ages Review: This is a useful book for teenagers to read too! He talks about working on yourself and developing good habits - definately something we teenagers have to work on. I loved it and it helped me change a lot of areas in my life.
Rating: Summary: This is the book we wanted!!! Review: This is an amazing book. This book provides the support I have been looking for. I have never been able to successfully defend my position when questioned about why my husband and I are so restrictive about screen time and will not give our children Game Boys. There are plenty of research studies referenced in this book to more than adequately support our stand. Additionally, I read the sleep requirements chapter to my 9 year old son... and he has been going right to sleep when it is his bed time. I think that the quote from the study that said, something like... Sleep deficiency makes you stupid... was what did it. You will love this book.
Rating: Summary: Helpful for ALL ages Review: This is an excellent text for someone looking for a single volume on the basics of parenting. He provides answers to all the hard questions, from bedtime to tantrums, etc. He also provides a simple system for understanding how to move our children from where they are behaviorally and cognitively to where they need to be. He cites a tremendous among of data verifying the effectiveness of his approach, although it is obvious to anyone with commonsense that his approach will work. I have been using his system for a few weeks, and so far I am VERY satisfied with the results. I have read other parenting books, but nothing has actually worked as well as this.

Rating: Summary: Great book, but not what I expected Review: This was a great book on training up young people. It was difficult to rate this book because I purchased it expecting ancient wisdom from the sages, but found a fairly detailed modern day analysis of issues in modern day child rearing. The author appears to have an in depth understanding of the current research available on many topics. I was a bit disturbed with some of the statistical representations, but I do not believe that they significantly distract from the books content. I have a great deal of respect for the written and oral Jewish history. I was hoping this book would spend more time expounding on this aspect. The book uses a bit of this wisdom as the foundation to which the modern day research was laid. More credence seemed to be given to the modern day research (with some implied cause and effect) rather than the foundation of the wisdom handed down from God to Moses. This is a great book and well worth the time. I highly recommend it to educators, parents, grandparents and the like.
Rating: Summary: Ancient wisdom modernized Review: To Kindle A Soul affords the world an opportunity to glimpse into the Traditional Jewish world's approach to child rearing. Rabbi Kelemen evaluates the 3,300 years old child rearing methodology given to the Jews at Mt. Sinai against the findings of current behavioral studies and finds the tight correlation to each other staggering. The book is written so that anyone who is raising or planning on raising children, regardless whether they are Jewish or not, can learn and apply the teachings without having to become a Traditional Jew. Topics covered in To Kindle A Soul range from children's biological requirements to their emotional and spiritual needs and ends off with evaluating how television usage is affecting child and parent alike. The most important message in this book is that instead of using tricks to the change our children, we should transform ourselves into the healthy, compassionate, and productive people that we want our children to become.
