Rating: Summary: the parent calming book Review: I bought this book out of frustration and exhaustion. Two weeks after my daughter was born, I regretted reading too much about pregnancy and not about babies! At three weeks, I was looking for anything that would make the crying stop! My daughter seemed to be crying 75% of her waking hours! She slept far less than the average infant did, so my ears never seemed to get a break. I didn't understand how such a little creature could make so much noise! I spent much of my "should be sleeping while the baby is sleeping" hours reading several books. This book includes several stories of frustrated parents of very fussy babies. I felt better knowing that I wasn't alone and I could get through all of it. Before I read the book, I kept my baby from sucking her hand because I didn't want her to become a thumb-sucker. I didn't realize it was instinctive. Overall, reading the book didn't make my baby cry less but did make me more understanding and patient.
Rating: Summary: Another excellent book to give to expectant parents Review: I got fed up with searching for a pacifier every time my three month old son started to fuss. Really resented that I ever allowed myself to succumb to using one. I read "The Self-Calmed Baby" as a means to reduce both my son's and my dependence on this thing. More my dependence than his! Along the way I learned new ways to reduce my son's frustration and help him calm himself. And about the dumb things parents do to thwart their childs built in abilities to calm themselves. My son still uses the pacifier but only for specific situations. As a result of reading this book I have gotten pretty good at reading my son's behavior and helping him to help himself. At three months, he's a calm, content baby. I plan to buy another copy to give at the next baby shower. Also highly recommend "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth.

Rating: Summary: Take it with a grain of salt Review: I got this for our second child. Our first is a champion thumb sucker, but #2 was having trouble getting the knack. Some of the information is interesting, but I found myself feeling horribly guilty for how I had handled our first child, and began to wonder if her behavior now is "my fault" vs just being a typical two year old. So read it with a grain of salt.

Rating: Summary: Don't Listen to the Naysayers Review: I have two kids. This book was INDESPENSIBLE for both of them, when they were infants. They have grown into healthy, happy 8 and 5 year olds, respectively."The Self-Calmed Baby" helped restore some sanity into our lives and our household. I have bought a copy for all my friends who are first-time parents. It is an excellent book, and offers excellent advice. I don't know what planet the Moms are on who hate this book. I think it's one of the best baby advice books ever written. I wish it wasn't out of print. If you can get a copy used, by all means, get one. It's worth it.

Rating: Summary: The best five dollars I have ever spent Review: I just recently read all of the reviews of this book and I hope all of those who are considering buying this book, take a look at the lives of those who bought it and applied the steps that Dr. Sammons outlines in his book and those who didn't. At the age of eight weeks old, my daughter has slept everynight for at least 10 - 12 hours (except for illness or teething), taken two-two hour naps until just recently as she gave up her morning nap prior to turning one. Some people tell me that I am just lucky to have a daughter who sleeps so well. Well, let me tell you, I wasn't for the first eight weeks. Nothing would get her to sleep except sheer exhaustion. Not even a car ride could always get her to sleep. Finally, after desperation, I asked my pediatrician what I could do and immediately, she told me to buy this book. I read it in a day and started at it. Some days were good, some days were bad, but within one week, my daughter was going to sleep on her own. It was the first time she had ever snored! She was so sound asleep and getting quality sleep. She never got that with a pacifier. A month later my daughter was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis and had to have stomach surgery but even in the hospital, she did not forget how to go to sleep on her own. I could have screamed at the nurses who wanted to rock her and I told them just to put her down! They couldn't believe that she would just go to sleep. Several asked me what I had done. I told them about this book. The night my daughter went to sleep on her own, I gave away my rocking chair and swing and I have never need them since. Adults give children bad habits such as pacifiers, swings, bouncing a child up and down, etc., I called Dr. Sammons 1-800 number and he spoke with me more than once. It does work..but it takes your patient and determination. If any of you need help, I would be happy to offer my experience of this great book.
Rating: Summary: The best... Review: I just recently read all of the reviews of this book and I hopeall of those who are considering buying this book, take a look at thelives of those who bought it and thought it was "against their parental instincts" and those who wanted to teach their children how to calm themselves and get a good night's sleep. Basically, it's against my parental instincts that my daughter should have to suffer through another night of exhaustion. Compare that to those who did applied the steps that Dr. Sammons outlines in his book At the age of eight weeks old, my daughter has slept everynight for at least 10 - 12 hours (except for illness or teething), taken two-two hour naps until just recently as she gave up her morning nap prior to turning one.
