FULL of information about what Doulas can do
for couples wanting to have a happy birth
experience as well as how a Doula is a
unique and incredibly important addition to
to any happy childbirth experience. This book
not only tells the reader the results of the
research that's been done on how a Doula can
help shorten labor and how a Doula can improve
the feelings of the couple after the birth
both to each other and the child, but it also
explains exactly what a Doula does and what
she ACTUALLY DOES for the couple during the
birth. As a registered Doula working towards
certification, I just can not say enough good
things about this book...or about Amazon.com's
service and I recommend both liberally
whenever I get the chance.

Review: Inspired me to hire a doula/labor assistant- and it was definitely worth it. Find out what most of womankind throughout history has known about support in labor, and why you should rely on someone other than just your partner. He has a different role, learn what the role of a doula is

Review: Mothering the Mother was great. When you are having your first, you're nervous, no matter how well you prepare. This book discussed the importance of having a doula and what to expect from her. Knowing these things and having a doula will definitely make the experience less stressful for both me and my husband.

Summary: turned me off to doulas
Review: This book turned me off to the whole idea of a doula. For financial reasons, I was unable to hire a doula but had heard they could be a big help and this book came highly recommended. I was hoping for a section on breathing or relaxation techniques. I came away with the feeling the authors felt no birth experience could be a success or enjoyable unless a doula was present. There was a very clear message that the father could not be a sufficient coach and his role was periphery to the doula. I was disappointed in the lack of encouragement the authors gave the father to be an active participant in the whole birth process or that the mother would lose control of herself if a doula was not present. It was almost a throw back to when my father had to fight to be at my birth and that was 30 years ago.
