Summary: Best Pregnancy Book I have Seen!!!!
Review: I have read a couple pregnancy books and mostly they have caused unnecessary alarm and don't seem to touch on the questions and concerns that I have had.
This book COVERS EVERYTHING!! Every concern and worry that I have had has been addressed in a clear and percise manner. I had a m/c a little bit ago and there is an entire chapter about conceiving after a m/c.
His writing style is great and easy to follow and makes a VERY easy read while still providing exceptional factual information that has been very very helpful.
Some of the other reviews found his tone patronizing, however, I thought that it was the exact opposite. He talked to you like a good, very knowledgeble doctor that was caring and truly concered about his patients health and well-being.
I am very lucky that I have an OB that I really like and can makes the time to answer all of my questions, but after having a previous m/c I am constantly filled with worry over every little thing. Stuff that you can't call your doctor 12 times a day for, and this book was the solution. It has really helped to ease my mind and concentrate on my well-being instead of being consumed with worry.
I would recommend this to ANY pg women, especially one that has some additional concerns and worries.

Summary: Sometimes funny, often reassuring, frequently patronizing
Review: I like the mainstream medical profession just fine, but Dr. DiLeo irritates me, and that's not just my pregnancy hormones talking. The things other reviewers have said about his dismissive attitude towards home births, avoiding episiotomies, and so on are true, but his delivery is even more irritating than the content of what he says. I don't want a home birth, but I'm not under the impression that women who do are looking to save money. Dr. DiLeo is.
He shows a lot of sympathy for woman who are worried about their babies' well-being, but he doesn't seem to think women have heard about studies on the various aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, so he just throws out his opinion and expects people to accept it. If you're trying to be a responsible parent-to-be and doing your research, I can't imagine this will fly with you. It didn't with me.
If you want to read something by an MD who's respectful of the layperson's mind and not wildly hostile to anything other than the MDeity way, try Feinbloom's "Pregnancy, Birth, and the Early Months."

Summary: My second pregnancy, but my favorite pregnancy book!
Review: I loved this book!! This is my second pregnancy, so I had most of the typical pregnancy books. I bought this book when I was 6 months pregnant and started reading in the middle - the part that I thought applied to me. I found that I couldn't put it down. I was laying in bed cracking up laughing to myself as I read it. This book gives a wealth of information and is a great reference, but most pregnancy books do that. This book, however, does it in a way that is entertaining and easy to read.

This author is as close to knowing how it feels to be pregnant as a man can be. His compassion and humor for the experience is refreshing because most men just don't get it. This one does. I'm sure going through all those pregnancies with his wife gave him great insight into this experience other than his practice alone. I loved the husbands tips and read them to my husband often. I have also told everyone about this book who has ever been pregnant or plans to be pregnant. I even told my mother (who has six children) that she would thoroughly enjoy this book. Thank you for this book-It has given me laughter during some miserable pregnant moments.

Summary: Useful information with a humorous touch
Review: I read many guides to pregnancy, but none discussed the medical facts as clearly as this book did. Dr. DiLeo addresses issues associated with pregnancy as if his readers are both intelligent and have a sense of humor. I used this book a great deal to understand what was happening to me from a medical point of view. I also xeroxed out pages for friends who had questions-even ladies who were in their second pregancy! I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is expecting a child, first or otherwise.

Summary: Cutting edge information!
Review: I think the difference between this book and the others is that this doctor is on top of everything because he's still doing it. The other authors have made tidy little books that read like muzak. This book is not only a hoot, but it's got information on unusual subjects that will come up that the others don't even mention. For instance, as "natural" and safe as some books make VBAC sound, this book is more complete by also discussing the downside of such things. Finally there is a balanced presentation that gives the total picture. Finally here is a book that trusts YOU to decide what approach to take. This non-preachy approach is a breath of fresh air. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and tell everyone to get it.

Summary: This book is the right stuff!
Review: I'm familiar with all of the popular books, but this one is the most obvious, down-to-earth, and absolutely right information on any aspect of pregnancy. Just looking through the table of contents alone sold me. It's amazing how Dr. DiLeo presents such an organized book with such an easy flow that makes an enjoyable read. Not to mention that it's the most recent book on pregnancy (copyright 2002), by a doctor, and by a doctor who not only has been in practice for 20 years but has a bunch of kids himself. And you can sense this in every sentence. Every aspect of pregnancy is presented from so many different angles--doctor, husband, father, teacher, humorist--all at the same time. Not one other author on the rack can boast of these qualifications. The recent copyright assured me of the latest information available anywhere. And the inclusion of all of the controversies--some famous and some not so famous--gave me a lot to think about with some major decisions I had to make. I live in a very "politically correct" area, and I even go to a woman obstetrician, but as a nurse myself this book stands as a breath of fresh air in the crowded pregnancy book market mostly by people pushing their chic points of view. My only criticism is that there's no picture of the author. I really would like to see what this guy looks like!

If you're going to buy just one book, get this one. If you buy a bunch, let this one put the others into perspective.

Summary: Finally, the perfect pregnancy book.
Review: It seems like 5 stars are not nearly enough for this! I have looked for many sources on pregnancy and this one sums it into one fun to read, informative, reasurring, and honest book. Who would have thought a book about pregnancy would be such a page-turner? The author captures your heart as well as your mind making it difficult to close the book and put it down. In fact, I'm buying it for all of my pregnant friends (and my "trying to get pregnant" friends). It is such a pleasure to read. My husband has even read a few of the chapters. The format is very convenient and the "frequently asked question" section is a great quick reference. This is the one and only book you will need. I highly recommend this book to any pregnant woman or anyone currently trying to get pregnant. A great buy.

Summary: Lighten up, people
Review: It seems that the negative reviews are all by home birth people. Dr. DiLeo does not "dismiss" home births, just advises against them. What a sticking point to these people, who seem to rally 'round one single point in the book like sharks circling prey. This book is great! It has it all, for one thing. It has a sense of humor, which is a welcome change from the stuffy, sanctimonious diatribes of other books. And it is the most compassionate book about pregnancy loss I've ever seen. It has all of the other things you want and even some aspects of pregnancy no other book has dared talk about. But most of all, it's a celebration of pregnancy and literally shouts about how miraculous it is. And the main point is so right on: it's not how you have the baby, it's how you raise the baby. As a mother of three (and a half!), I can tell you that after you hold your baby in your arms and begin the journey of raising him or her, all of the over-scrupulous checklists of the perfect attendant, the perfect setting, the perfect this and the perfect that (that other fanatics say you have to obey) will quickly pale and fade away. This book plants you firmly in the real word, but is always on your side. After reading all of the reviews of my favorite pregnancy book, the negative ones are by people with a chip on their shoulders. Lighten up and enjoy this fine publication.

By the way, it wasn't lost on me that the publisher, McGraw-Hill, is the same publisher that puts out Williams Obstetrics, the book all the obstetricians use.

Summary: Abused as a child...and pregnant
Review: My husband bought this book for me mainly because of the title! My second pregnancy was very different from my first and you could definitely say I was an anxious mother-to-be. Dr. DiLeo's writing style immediately drew me in and made me feel so much more confident about childbirth. His sense of humor makes you actually laugh out loud! His book also covers SO MUCH MORE than any of the other pregnancy books. I think what sets this book apart from the others is that you're getting information from a real doctor that seems to genuinely care about women and their families. I can honestly say that after reading this book I came away with more information and peace of mind than I did from seeing my own OB for 9 months!
