Even on the issues I don't agree with, I have to respect where the book is coming from, as it is clear that there is a great deal of research, and thought and experience behind every aspect of this book.
This is not just some parent's musings on family life. There is valuable infomation, and research and evidence are provided.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Too extreme for many readers' tastes Review: I am committed to an attached parenting style and to raising my son as far away as possible from some of the most toxic tendencies of our culture. Therefore, I came to this book looking for support. And Peggy O'Meara has enormous writing talent--she writes beautifully and poetically. It's also good for parents to ask questions of the mainstream establishment and in that sense I can support what this book is trying to do.But, taken as a whole, this is just WAY out there. Apparently the only way to join this "club" is to raise an unvaccinated, unschooled, uncircumcised, unmedicated, home-birthed, cloth-diapered, vegetarian child. How realistic is that for most of us? And does it mean we're not "attached" (or environmentally correct) parents if we CHOSE to have hospital births (with epidurals), and to be socially responsible enough to vaccinate our children and participate in the community via public schools? It seems our society today never tires of finding new ways to make parents--especially mothers--feel guilty and inadequate. If it's not coming from the right wingers who want us to beat our children and "let them cry it out," then it's coming from books like these which make us feel like failures because we found childbirth a little painful and cloth diapers a little inconvenient. I came to this book expecting more support for individual decisions and choices and for families making the decisions that are right for them. Instead, I found just another indoctrination into ideology. It seems you cannot find a parenting guide out there that isn't burdened with ideology and with demonizing parents who make different choices than you would. My advice is to read it--it's well written and interesting food for thought--but make up your own mind.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: MUST HAVE Review: I have given this book to many expectant mothers and young families. All have thanked me over and over. I find the presentation very balanced. For instance, they don't say - "Don't vaccinate," but rather, "here's the data on vaccination - you decide." Throughout the book, it invites the reader to use his/her own sense and own values to determine the best outcome for child and parents. Who wants a set of somebody else's rules? Not this generation! It covers a wide range of information up into the teen years if I remember correctly. Schooling choices, etc. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

Review: I have two parenting books I thoroughly enjoy, and this is one of them (Dr. Sears "The Baby Book" is the other). I am trying very hard to be a great attachment parent, and so far, I agree with everything I've read in this book. Great overviews on a wide variety of topics.
