Rating: Summary: you learn something new every day Review: after 4 kids, I should know it all, but I've never been almost 40 before, so I bought this book. it answered my questions about the diabetes I have this time. I wish I had had the book when I was having the amnio, because my doctor really didn't answer my questions very well, and I didn't know about the option of earlier testing. I didn't get to finish reading it because my little sister "borrowed" it as soon as she found out she was pregnant.
Rating: Summary: Don't Rub it In Review: I am 36 yeards old and pregnant. Of course, I received books from everybody. Although well-intentioned, I wish the giver had read through the first few chapters. I know there are more risks associated with pregnancy as a woman ages. We all know it. I think all women worry about miscarriages, birth defects, and other horrible things that can happen. This book spends much to much time going into the detail of all the risks, and only a scant amount of time on the rewards. I wanted to be excited about my pregnancy, not terrified. I found this book to be negative and worrying, and not the least bit encouraging. I threw the book away after my eighth week. It was all that I could take. I suggest to all well-meaning gifters that you pass over this book and look for something more positive.

Rating: Summary: Why didn't I get this before??!! Review: I bought this book 3-months after my first child was stillborn when I was 37. Convinced that I needed to be more informed for the next time I was pregnant, I wanted a book that would address ME and MY special circumstances. Boy .. did I luck out. Dr. Shanahan has dealt with over-35's pregnancies and had one herself - she KNOWS of which she speaks. Now I feel absolutely READY to face another pregnancy. I especially LOVE the regular snapshots showing REAL people as well as excerpts from Dr. Shanahan's journal (she leaves us space to jot our own quick notes). And the question and answer part asks the questions that are buzzing through my head and are answered simply and honestly. In short - GREAT book! Buy it for yourself or someone close to you. You WON'T regret it!
Rating: Summary: Informative but scary Review: I did not particularly enjoy this book. I found it to be full of frightening "what-if's." I would reccomend it to anyone over 35 who is expecting their first baby as is contains a lot of info on the developing fetus etc...but I thought the overall tone was too doom-and -gloom for me.
Rating: Summary: Very helpful and informative Review: I had read "What to Expect When You're Expecting" but when I saw this book in the library I was all over it - something that caters to the over 35 woman! It was easy to read and had a lot of good technical information as well as a personal touch as the author herself had an over 35 pregnancy as well as some miscarriages. I'm not pregnant (yet!) but I look forward to being able to go back and take advantage of the week by week format that the author presents.

Rating: Summary: Real advice from a real person Review: I have two kids already, but one of my friends gave me this book because I just turned 36. I have found it to be very helpful in gathering the information I needed to decide on whether or not to have a amniocentesis. Even though I'm only 4 months pregnant, I couldn't help but skim through the whole book already. I really enjoyed the doctor's journal notes. They made me realize some of my thoughts are not so crazy -- even an ob doctor worries!! My own doctor would NEVER share her personal feelings, and it is so nice to know that at least some doctors out there are human. I'll be giving this as shower gifts to all my pregnant friends.
Rating: Summary: Helpful hints Review: I like the way this book gives me questions to ask my doctor. It talks about common concerns moms have and discusses possible problems without being alarmist. The doctor who wrote it made me feel like I was talking to her, but I sure don't know how she does all the stuff she does! My doctor is pregnant now, but she is pretty young, so I don't feel like she understands what it is like to be pregnant with grey hair and wrinkles!
