Summary: Not enough solid information and poorly organized
Review: I bought this book because I wanted to know what I could do to increase my odds of conceiving quickly. While there's some good information in the book, there's also a lot of less than reliable information that's not backed by hard facts. To make matters worse, the book is poorly organized so you have to really hunt and peck to find what you're looking for.

I highly recommend Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and John Sussman and Ann Douglas' "The Unofficial Guide to Having A Baby" as alternatives to this book.

Summary: Interesting..but scary!
Review: I bought this book because my husband and I are planning the conception of our first child. Whilst it has some very informative sections, it makes it appear that the only way to conceive a baby is to be the pefect weight, at the perfect time and with everything perfectly planned. After approaching my doctor with questions about all the tests and everything that this book recommends, he said 'People have been having babies for thousands of years without books, you have to remember that the highest probability is that you will conceive easily and bring to term a healthy, happy baby.' I think that is probably better value than the 400 or so pages in this book. I would only recommend this if you are having considerable problems getting pregnant.

Summary: This is an excellent book for anyone trying to conceive!
Review: I bought this book when my husband and I decided to try getting pregnant. It is very informative and an easy read. It is not too technical, but still offers adequate medical and health information. This book covers all the bases for a couple who is entertaining the idea of having a child to a couple who is having difficulty conceiving. There are tips on how you can alter your lifestyle to insure the best odds of conception and alternatives for couples who are having trouble. This book answered many questions for me on how to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

I would certainly recommend this book to any couple who wants to get pregnant fast! I am keeping my fingers crossed that this book will work for me!

Summary: Some useful information, but could be better
Review: I certainly can't say that Dr. Laursen's book doesn't havevalue- there are many practical tips for couples to try, and he doeskeep a hopeful tone through the book that I'm sure any couple having difficulty with conceiving would appreciate.

But what bothered me about this book was his lack of respect for the act of procreation in general and embryonic life in particular. Controversial and morally difficult methods of reproduction like IVF and surrogate motherhood are pushed with a "rah-rah" attitude that ignores serious potential problems (such as frozen embryos and divorce)and important moral questions. He cheerfuly lets us know that as many as eight emryos might be implanted during an IVF procedure, simply to get *one or two* possible live births. That's a death rate of 75 to 88 percent- if we're "lucky".

I realize that these procedures are a part of Dr. Laursen's profession, and that I shouldn't be surprised that they are presented in such a book. I was not bothered so much by the information he gave as by the *attitude*- the idea that children are a commodity and that couples have a right to pregnancy that trumps every other consideration.

The possiblity that adoption might be a better route than artifical conception for some couples is not addressed. This is apparently part of his "everyone can and should get pregnant who wants to" attitude. But adoption is sometimes a less expensive and emotionally easier option that does not clash with anyone's moral beliefs. It ought to be acknowledged as the best choice for at least some couples.

Fertility medicine has obviously come a long way, but it needs to be confined to healing bodies and solving problems, not to "making babies" as if they were consumer products. Without intending to do it, this book helps show us why.

p.s. I hope I have not stepped on anyone's toes here with my opposition to artifical conception. I fully realize that babies conceived by these methods are cherished like all babies. But I will say again that this book has reinforced my opposition to such procedures.

Summary: For us type A s
Review: I loved this book. Since we are just starting to try to get pregnant, I use it more of a reference than anything. I am extremely type A, so for me, this offers concrete, useful solutions to trying to conceive more quickly. Yes, many people easily get pregnant without being so stringent, but if it can help me conceive 2 months faster by not drinking at all while trying to conceive or by using natural cleaning products, then I am happy to have access to that information.

Summary: Definately Lauersen's Best Book
Review: I read Getting Pregnant cover-to-cover when I tried to get pregant the first time , followed the advice, particularly the diet and vitamins, and conceived so quickly and had a very healthy baby, which was a Godsend to me because I had miscarried in the past. Now that we've decided to try for another baby, I'm back to buy another copy ( the first one was lent to so many friends I lost track of who has it ) and was thrilled to see that a new version will be out soon. I'm on the waiting list - can't wait to get it. By the way for any of you who have read Dr. Lauersen's other books and found them boring and hard to read, don't hesitate to buy this one. It's definately written MUCH better than the others and , in my opinion, a lot more helpful.

Summary: May 2000 Edition of "Getting Pregnant" is my New Bible!
Review: I suffer from infertility and endometriosis. The latest edition of "Getting Pregnant" is excellent and a huge improvement from the last edition. It has been completely revised and updated for the millenium with all of the latest information on infertility treatment and fertility procedures. I feel that this would be one of the most helpful books for anyone who is trying to get pregnant (and I own A LOT of fertility books). I also consider this to be a great source of information for couples who are suffering from infertility.

The 2000 edition contains a bunch of new information and is twice the size of the 1992 edition. It includes the more "advanced" fertility info on immune disorders, male infertility, diet & "fertility foods", preventing miscarriage, new fertility surgeries, latest on high-tech fertility procedures, latest on fertility drugs and as well as the more basic information on how to increase your chances of conceiving, etc. (stuff for "beginners").

I finally did conceive last month, but I sadly miscarried 2 weeks ago. I was looking for pregnancy loss books, when I noticed that my "Getting Pregnant" book had been updated. I decided to purchase this book instead of a miscarriage book. I am really glad I did! It has helped me look forward to resuming my infertility treatment so I can try to get pregnant again. I am also looking forward to discussing many of the things that I learned from this book with my Reproductive Endocrinologist at our next consultation.

I really appreciate how encouraging Dr. Laurensen is. He is positive and upbeat, while remaining realistic. I am going through a really difficult time right now and this book has "lifted my spirits" a little bit. The book is also very easy to read, eventhough it covers some very technical stuff. It is very "reader-friendly"!

Much thanks to Dr. Laurensen and Ms. Bouchez for revising and updating their book!

Summary: I thought I was being overly sensitive
Review: I thought I was being overly sensitive until I read that another reader was not overjoyed with the tone of this book. At least I am not alone.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Would not recomend this couples just beginning to try
Review: I thought the book was ok but not really geared for couples just starting to try to conceive as it claims to be. There are a few helpful suggestions on baby making but most of the info is about the many things that can possibly be wrong with you or your spouse to cause you NOT to conceive and about medical treatments available.
